Iningai

TheIningai(Yiningayi) are anindigenous Australianpeople of the present-dayLongreach Regionin the state ofQueensland.

The traditional lands of the Iningai lay to the west of theGreat Dividing Rangeas far as the Forsyth Range,[1]Maneroo Creek,andLongreach.Norman Tindaleestimated their territory as encompassing an area close to 19,500 sq. miles. Their southern frontier lay along the tributaries of theAlice Riverdown to the vicinity ofMexico.[2]Their northern limits were atMuttaburra,Cornish Creek,Tower Hill,Bowen Downs,andNorth Oakvale.They were also present atAramac.[3]

Muttaburra derives its name from one of the Iningai clan names.

The Iningai were composed of several Band societyhordes, some of whose names survive:-

  • Muttaburra
  • Tateburra(north of Cornish Creek)
  • Terreburra(Alice River)[3]
