Innichen(German:[ˈɪnɪçn̩] ;Italian:San Candido[saŋˈkandido];Ladin:Sanciana) is a municipality and a village inSouth Tyrolin northernItaly.
It is located in thePuster Valleyon theDrava River,on Italy's border withAustria.It hosts Italy’s International Snow Sculpture Festival each year.[3]
Innichen is renowned for its ski resorts, and it includes the natural park ofDrei Zinnen–Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Innichen borders the municipalities ofToblach,Innervillgraten(Austria),Sexten,andSillian(Austria).
History[edit]
Innichen is home to theInnichen Abbey,founded in the late 8th century (769) byduke Tassilo III of Bavaria,belonging to thePrince-Bishopric of Freising.[4]The abbey itself was disestablished in 1785, while the surrounding estates were acquired by theCounty of Tyrolafter theMediatisationof 1803 (Reichsdeputationshauptschluss). According to theterms of the Treaty of Saint-Germain,Innichen became part of the thenKingdom of Italyin 1919. Innichen is still the site of aFranciscanmonastery founded in 1691.
Coat-of-arms[edit]
The emblem shows anargenttower with the Ghibellinemerlonon two levels, with the portaland theportcullis;above the door a coat of arms showing the head of a Moor, crowned with anordiadem onazure.The tower has settled onvertcountryside andgules.This kind of representation points out that the site was once under the rule of the Bishops ofFreisingowners of a large area in the region from 769 to 1803. The coat of arms was granted by KingAlbert I of Germanyin 1303.[5]
