James B. Harris(born August 3, 1928) is an American film screenwriter, producer, and director. Born in New York City, he attended theJuilliard School[1]before entering the film industry. He worked with film directorStanley Kubrickas a producer onThe Killing(1956),Paths of Glory(1957), andLolita(1962). Harris' directorial debut was theCold WarthrillerThe Bedford Incident(1965). He also directed the actorJames Woodsin two films: the prison-guard dramaFast-Walking(1982) with actressKay Lenz,and the thrillerCop(1988), based on aJames Ellroynovel, which Woods co-produced. Harris also directed the 1993 thrillerBoiling Point.[2]
TheTurner Classic Movieswebsite describes Harris as a "veteran Hollywood industry figure who has served triple duty as a producer, director, and screenwriter".[3]A 2002 interview between Harris and Hollywood Five-O includes discussion of his works as well as of Kubrick,Marlon Brando,Laurence Olivier,Lolita,and various other topics. It includes photos of Harris andscreencapsofKirk Douglas,Sue Lyon(who portrayed Lolita),James Mason,andPeter Sellers.[4]His brother was the composerJ. Robert Harris.[4]
In 2020, Lyon's friendsMichelle Phillipsand Jim Maxwellalleged that Harris had sex with 14-year-old Lyonduring the production ofLolitaand was also following her around the country obsessively.[5]
