Jason Ferus Blum(/blʌm/;[2]born February 20, 1969)[1][3]is an American producer. He is founder and CEO ofBlumhouse Productions,which has produced the horror franchisesParanormal Activity(2007–2021),Insidious(2010–2023),The Purge(2013–2021), andHalloween(2018–2022). Blum has also producedSinister(2012),Oculus(2013),Whiplash(2014),The Gallows(2015),The Gift(2015),Hush(2016),Split(2016),Ouija: Origin of Evil(2016),Get Out(2017),Happy Death Day(2017),Upgrade(2018),Us(2019),The Invisible Man(2020),Freaky(2020),The Black Phone(2021),M3GAN(2022),Five Nights at Freddy's(2023), andSpeak No Evil(2024).
Blum received nominations for theAcademy Award for Best Picturefor producingWhiplash(2014),Get Out(2017) andBlacKkKlansman(2018).[4]He received thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Moviefor producing the drama filmThe Normal Heart(2014). He also won thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Seriesfor the documentary miniseriesThe Jinx(2015).
Early life and education
[edit]Jason Ferus Blum[3]was born inLos Angeles,California,[5]the son ofShirley Neilsen Blum(née Neilsen) and Irving Blum. His mother was an art professor and his father was an independent art dealer and director of theFerus Gallery.[6][7]Blum is ofJewishheritage.[8][9]
He graduated fromVassar Collegein 1991.[10]While at Vassar, he and fellow future filmmakerNoah Baumbachwere roommates, and Blum produced Baumbach's first film,Kicking and Screaming,in 1995.[11][12]
Career
[edit]Blum worked forBobandHarvey Weinsteinas an executive atMiramax,and later as an independent producer forParamount Pictures.Prior to his tenure at Miramax, Blum was a producing director atEthan Hawke'sMalaparte theater company.[13]He is a member of the board of trustees of theAcademy Museum of Motion Pictures.[14]
He obtained financing for his first film as producer,Kicking and Screaming(1995), after receiving a letter from family acquaintance, entertainerSteve Martin,who endorsed the script.[15]Blum attached the letter to copies of the script he sent around to Hollywood executives.[15]
Blumhouse Productions
[edit]In 2000, he foundedBlumhouse Productions,which specializes in producingmicro-budgetmovies that give directors full creative control over the projects.[13]Bloomberg Newspraised Blum for making "blockbusters for pennies",[16]including the horror filmParanormal Activity,which cost $15,000 to make and then grossed nearly $200 million.[17]In addition,NPR'sPlanet Moneydid a special podcast about the company's methods.[18]
Blum also producedInsidious(2010),Sinister(2012),The Purge(2013) andHappy Death Day(2017), as well as their sequels.[19]In 2014, he served as executive producer for the television filmThe Normal Heart,which went on to win thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.In 2015, he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series for HBO'sThe Jinx.[20]
Blum's feature filmsBlacKkKlansman,WhiplashandGet Outwere all nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Picture.[4]
In 2018, Blum said in an interview that the reason no woman had ever directed one of his horror films was that "there are not a lot of female directors (...) and even less who are inclined to do horror."[21]After much criticism on social media, in which lists of such directors were circulated,[22]he apologized for what he called his "dumb comments".[23]In 2019,Sophia Takaldirected and co-wrote the studio's horror remakeBlack Christmas,which opened on December 13, and was the studio's first theatrically released film by a female director.[24][25]
Other ventures
[edit]On August 14, 2020,Daily Front Rowlisted Blum as one of a group of high-profile investors who purchasedW,a troubledfashionmagazine.[26]
After appearing on an episode ofShark Tank,Blum made a deal with American Immersion Theater, the leadingimmersive theatercompany in the U.S.[27]
Personal life
[edit]On July 14, 2012, Blum married journalist Lauren A.E. Schuker inLos Angeles.[6]
In July 2019, he bought aBrooklyn Heightstownhouse for $9.8 million.[28]
Boards
[edit]Blum is on the Board of The Public Theater in New York, the Sundance Institute,Vassar College,and theAcademy Museum of Motion Pictures.
Philanthropy
[edit]In 2022, Blum donated $10 million toVassar College,the largest gift ever given to the college from a male alumnus.[29]
