Sept-Îles(Frenchforseven islands) orJentilez(inBreton) is a smallarchipelagooff the north coast ofBrittany,in thePerros-GuireccommuneofCôtes-d'Armor.This group of islands is home to an important bird reserve, and is the home of variousseabirds,includingnorthern gannets,cormorants,and members of theAlcidaefamily (puffins,common guillemots,razorbills). This is also a reserve forgrey seals.[1]

Islands of the Archipelago

[edit]

Despite its name, theSept-Ilesare only made up of five islands and a handful of rocks. The French nameSept-Ilesderived from a misunderstanding of the oldBretonname for the islands, theSentiles.The name stuck, however, and two groups ofreefswere designated as islands in order for the name to stay true. The 5 main islands (orEnezinBreton) are:

  • Enez Bonnoin Breton,Île Bonoin French: the largest of the islands;
  • Enez Platin Breton,Île platein French;
  • Enez ar BreurorJentilezin Breton,Île aux Moinesin French: the only island accessible to the public, where you can find alighthouse(theSept-Îles Lighthouse) and the remains of afort;
  • Melbannin Breton,Île de Malbanin French;
  • Riouzigin Breton,Île Rouzicin French: the main spot for birds.

In addition to these islands, the two reefs are calledar Zerrin Breton,le Cerfin French (the deer), andKostann.

Other islets includeEnez ar Razhed(Rat island) andar Moudennoù.

The isle ofTaveeg(Tomé) is closer to the coast, and is not considered part of the archipelago.
