Jill Valentine[a]is a character inResident Evil(Biohazardin Japan), asurvival horrorvideo game series created by the Japanese companyCapcom. She was introduced as one of the twoplayer charactersin the originalResident Evil(1996), alongside her partnerChris Redfield,as a member of theRaccoon City Police Department's Special Tactics And Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) unit. Jill and Chris fight against theUmbrella Corporation,a pharmaceutical company whosebioterrorismcreateszombiesand other bio-organic weapons, and later become founding members of theUnited Nations' Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA).

Jill is the protagonist of severalResident Evilgames, novelizations, films, and has also appeared in other game franchises includingMarvel vs. Capcom,Project X Zone,Teppen, andDead by Daylight. In later games, such as the2002Resident Evilremake,The Umbrella Chronicles(2007),Resident Evil 5(2009), andThe Mercenaries 3D(2011), her features were based on Canadian model and actressJulia Voth.Several actresses have portrayed Jill, includingSienna GuilloryandHannah John-Kamenin thelive-actionResident Evilfilms.

Video game publicationsdescribed Jill as among the most popular and iconic video game characters, and praised her as the most likable and consistentResident Evilcharacter. She has received both acclaim and criticism with regard togender representation in video games.Several publications praised the series for its portrayal of women and considered Jill significantly lesssexualizedthan other female game characters; she was also cited as an example of a female character who was as competent and skilled as her male counterparts. Others argued she was weakened as a protagonist by attributes that undermined her role as a heroine, specifically an unrealistic body shape that did not reflect her military background; some of her overtly sexualized costumes have also been criticized.

Concept and design

Julia Voth, picturedcosplayingJill's original design from the firstResident Eviland its remake, was the model for the character's appearance from 2002 until the2020 remake ofResident Evil 3.[14]

Jill was introduced as one of twoplayable protagonists, alongside her partnerChris Redfield,inCapcom's 1996survival horrorvideo gameResident Evil.[15]She was created bydirectorShinji MikamianddesignerIsao Ohishi.[13]To avoid thesexual objectificationofwomen in video games,Mikami refused to eroticize or portray women as submissive inResident Evil;instead, Jill was characterized as independent.[16]

Of Japanese and French descent,[17]Jill excelled atbomb disposalduring hertrainingwithDelta Force,[18]and later joined the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.)special operationsunit.[19]Experienced with weapons, explosives material, andlock picking,[20]she was intelligent, brave, and loyal.[21]Although theirstorylinesprogress toward "the same general direction",[22]thegameplaydiffers for Jill and Chris;[15][23]herinventoryis larger, and she has alock pick, giving her early access to morehealthand ammunition. Based on these differences, Jill was recommended to first-time players ofResident Evil.[22]Resident Evilgame designerJun Takeuchigave each character a unique clothing style to make them instantly recognisable, with Jill's character being given a distinct blue beret.[24]

According todigital mediascholarEsther MacCallum-Stewart,Mikami's female characters possess unique qualities making them viable choices for players to select over their male counterparts, and said theircombat attirehelped them avoid criticism of adhering to themale gaze.[25]Mikami explained: "I don't know if I've put more emphasis on women characters, but when I do introduce them, it is never as objects. In [other] games, they will be peripheral characters with ridiculous breast physics. I avoid that sort of obvious eroticism."[16]Despite this, subsequent games in the series not directed by Mikami depicted her wearing revealing costumes.[26][27][28]Media scholars said players have been intentionally encouraged to both objectify and identify with the character.[29][30]Several commentators suggested that Mikami's initial portrayal of Jill as a military professional tempered the ability of subsequent game directors to overtly sexualize the character.[16][31][32]

Jill continued to be redesigned over the course of the series.[33]In the2002 remakeof the original game, her appearance was based on Canadian model and actressJulia Voth.[34]Capcom producerHiroyuki Kobayashisaid they made her morekawaiiin the remake, but also kept her tough and muscular.[b]Voth's likeness was reused forResident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles(2007) andResident Evil 5(2009).[36][37]Resident Evil 5features Chris as a protagonist; designers opted to focus on how both characters had aged since the original game.[38]Jill underwent another redesign forResident Evil 5to reflect her status as a test subject inbiological researchexperiments.[39]Depicted with blonde hair, pale skin, and tight-fitting outfit – described as abattle suit[40]– these changes represent the effects of the experimentation.[41]Fans criticized the new appearance as an example of whitewashing.[40]MacCallum-Stewart suggested the popularity of the series was damaged by the unexplained reappearance of Jill as a "mind-controlledBDSMassassin ".[25]In the2020 remakeofResident Evil 3,Jill is modeled after Russian model Sasha Zotova.[42]Jill's redesign reflects the developers' creative vision behind the character's reimagination as a genuine action hero; because the art direction for the remake is based onphotorealism,Capcom wanted to ensure that Jill fits into the game world environment.[43]

Alternate costumes as rewards for players have been a staple of theResident Evilseries.[44]Completing the 2002 remake unlocked the ability to dress Jill in herResident Evil 3: Nemesisminiskirt costume and asSarah Connorfrom the 1991 filmTerminator 2: Judgment Day.[45]The miniskirt was added during development upon the staff's request. Following its addition, developers changed camera angles to reduce the amount ofupskirtingand matched the color of the skirt and underwear to make it less obvious.[46]The outfit reappears inResident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D(2011).[44]A prequel to the events ofResident Evil 5,thedownloadable content(DLC) episodeLost in Nightmaresincludes an alternative outfit for Jill,[47]based on military clothing andsportswear.[48]SinceResident Evil: Revelations(2012) was set at sea, her costume was made to resemble awetsuit.[49]The initial design featured more tactical gear attached to herbuoyancy control device, but it was removed to highlight her body's contours.[c]Her alternate outfit in the game, a revealing pirate costume, was deliberately made to be colorful to contrast with the storyline's dark themes.[27][28]

Voice-over and live-action actresses

The actresses who appeared in the original game'slive-actioncutscenesand recorded thevoice workwere credited only by their first names; Jill was portrayed by a high school student credited as "Inezh".[13][d]Over the course of the franchise, voice actresseswho played Jill includedCatherine DisherinResident Evil 3,[52]Heidi Anderson in the 2002 remake,[53]Kathleen Barrin Capcom's 2004 action-adventure gameUnder the Skin,[54]andTara PlattinPachislotBiohazard,[55]arecreationalarcade gamereleased solely in Japan.[56]Patricia Ja Leeprovided the voice andmotion capturefor bothThe Umbrella ChroniclesandResident Evil 5.[57][58]Kari Wahlgrenvoiced the character in the 2011 gameMarvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two WorldsandUltimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.[59]InRevelations,Jill was voiced byMichelle Ruff,[60]who returned for the non-canongameResident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.[61]Nicole Tompkins voiced and provided motion capture performance for Jill in the 2020Resident Evil 3remake and reprised her role in CG animated filmResident Evil: Death Island.[62][63]Atsuko Yuyavoiced Jill in the Japanese versions of the games.[64]

The character appeared in three entries of the originalResident Evilfilm series, where she was portrayed by English actressSienna Guillory.[11][65]Hannah John-Kamenplayed the role in the 2021 filmResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.[12]

Every game in the series is set in the fictional American metropolitan area of Raccoon City until its destruction at the end ofResident Evil 3: Nemesis.[66]Subsequent games featuring Jill take place on an international scale, namely in Russia,[66]Africa,[67]and the Mediterranean Sea.[60]The original game is set in July 1998 in a mansion on the outskirts of Raccoon City,[68]which Jill and her team enter while searching forcolleagues.[19][69]Working with partnerBarry Burton, she discovers the property is a façade for abiological warfarelaboratory operated by theUmbrella Corporationand itsundeadoccupants are the scientists who developed the T-virusmutagen.Her commanderAlbert Weskeris revealed to be adouble agentfor Umbrella.[66]Jill and Chris are among the five survivors of the incident,[66]who form a strong friendship and become passionate opponents ofbioterrorism.[70]

Jill did not appear inResident Evil 2(1998), as the production team used new protagonists (Leon S. KennedyandClaire Redfield) to preserve the original game's horror elements: Mikami believed Jill and Chris would be too experienced to be scared by the events in the sequel.[71][72]She returned as the sole protagonist inResident Evil 3(1999).[72]Mikami – the lead producer of bothNemesisand the concurrently-producedResident Evil – Code: Veronica(2000) – wanted each game to highlight a female character who had previously appeared in the series; Jill is the protagonist inNemesis, while Claire is thelead characterinCode: Veronica.[72]Commentators suggested these decisions were made as a result of the success of theTomb Raiderseries, which featuredLara Croftas the protagonist.[73]

Nemesisis set two months after the first game,[18]during which time Jill joined theRaccoon City Police Department(RCPD) to protect as many civilians as possible from the T-virus. The reason given by Capcom for her informal clothing in this entry was her resignation from the police immediately before the city's population was infected with the virus.[26]She quit in protest over the failure of law enforcement to take action against Umbrella but remained in the city to investigate the corporation.[e]The police uniform she wore in the original game was replaced with a less formal bluetube top,blackminiskirtandknee-high boots.[26][77]

InNemesis, she escapes Raccoon City before its destruction from anuclear strikeas part of aU.S. governmentcover-up.[66]She is pursued byNemesis,asupersoldier[78]whose task is to kill all remaining members of the S.T.A.R.S. team.[79]Instead of killing Jill, Nemesis infects her with the T-virus; her new partnerCarlos Oliveira[80]– a former Umbrellamercenary[74]– cures her of the infection with an Umbrella-produced vaccine.[52][66]The Umbrella Chroniclesoccurs in 2003, when Jill and Chris join a private organization with the goal of exposing Umbrella's biological warfare activities,[81]leading a group to destroy their only remaining research facility.[f]After the fall of the corporation, the pair become founding members of theUnited Nations' Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA).[66]InRevelations– set two years later – Jill and new partnerParker Lucianiare sent on a mission to rescue Chris, who is allegedly being held hostage on aghost shipin the Mediterranean. Once aboard, she discovers the ship is infested with a new type of mutagen capable of infecting theaquatic ecosystem.Jill and Chris then unravel a political conspiracy involving an earlier mutagenic outbreak and a botched investigation by a rival agency.[60]

Resident Evil 5takes place in 2009 in the fictional African town of Kijuju,[83]whereterroristsare turning local residents intozombies. One of these terrorists is revealed to be Jill,[84]who wasmissing in actionfor the previous two and a half years.[18]Set in 2006, theLost in NightmaresDLC showed Jill and Chris searching inside a mansion forUmbrella's founder;to save Chris from Wesker, Jill tackled the latter through a window.[85]Neither of their bodies were recovered, and Jill isdeclared dead.[67]In fact, she was injured by the fall and taken hostage by Wesker, who then used her as a test subject in his biological experiments. Theantibodiesproduced by Jill's system as a result of herNemesis-era T-virus infection were used as the basis for the Uroboros Virus,[84]the catalyst for the events ofResident Evil 5.[18]

DuringResident Evil 5,Chris discovers that Jill is alive; Wesker attached a mind-control device on Jill which forced her to commit the terrorist acts and fight Chris and his new partner, local BSAA agentSheva Alomar.[41][67]Jill finds enough self-control to open her outfit so the device can be seen and removed. After its removal, she explains that she knew what she was doing but was unable to control her actions[39]and urges Chris and Sheva to continue their mission.[67]Another DLC episode,Desperate Escape, describes how Jill was able to escape safety with the help of local BSAA agent Josh Stone before they aid both Chris and Sheva to kill Wesker.[86]

Jill Valentine'sResident Evil 3outfit (left) and its inclusion for the iteration of the character played bySienna Guilloryin the filmResident Evil: Apocalypse(modeled on the right) have received a divisive response.[33][87][88]

Jill features in several of theResident Evilfilms. She was originally scheduled to be the protagonist for the firstResident Evilmovie (2002), while it was under the direction ofGeorge A. Romero.WhenPaul W. S. Andersontook over from Romero, he created a new character for the film series,Alice, portrayed byMilla Jovovich.[89]Jill appears in the 2004 sequelResident Evil: Apocalypse, where she is a disgraced police officer who escapes the ruins of Raccoon City with the help of Alice and other survivors.[90][91]Her outfit in the movie is based on her clothing fromResident Evil 3.[87][92]Anderson considered explanations to justify the usage of the costume, such as having it described as anundercoveroutfit,[93]while Jovovich suggested using aheat waveas the reason.[92]Anderson eventually decided to ignore the issue altogether, arguing that people who would criticize her attire "probably shouldn't be watching aResident Evilmovie [at all]. "[93]

Jill appears in apost-credits sceneinResident Evil: Afterlife(2010), wearing the mind-controlling device fromResident Evil 5and leading an attack against Alice, Chris, Claire, and the survivors they rescued after a virus outbreak in Los Angeles.[94]InResident Evil: Retribution(2012), Jill is an antagonist programmed to capture Alice, but regains control of herself after Alice removes Wesker's mind-control device.[95]The film includes a fight between Jill and Alice containing around 200 moves.[g]She did not appear in the final film,Resident Evil: The Final Chapter(2016), apparently dyingoffscreen.[97]According to Jovovich, Jill was excluded because there were too manyResident Evilcharacters to include in the film.[98]TheResident Evilfilm series consistently received negative reviews.[99]Cinefantastiquepraised Guillory's performance inApocalypseas the film's only highlight.[100]In the reboot filmResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City(2021), Jill is played by Hannah John-Kamen.[12]She has also appeared in the 2023 animated film,Resident Evil: Death Island.[101]Jill's youthful appearance in the film, despite being aged 40, was said to be a result of the T-virus slowing her aging.[102]

Jill is a playable character in several non-canonResident Evilgames.[44][103][104]She features in numerousResident Evilmobile games, and is the protagonist ofResident Evil: Genesis(2008), an alternative-story version of the original game.[105]She is a playable character inMarvel vs. Capcom 2(2000),Marvel vs. Capcom 3(2011),[106]Project X Zone(2012),Project X Zone 2(2015),[107]Dead by Daylight(2016),[108]Puzzle Fighter(2017),[109]and thedigital collectible card gameTeppen(2019).[110]She appears as analternate skinforChun-LiinSuper Gem Fighter Mini Mix(1998),[111]CammyinStreet Fighter V(2016),[112]and Zofia inTom Clancy's The Division 2(2019),[113]and can also be selected as a playable skin inWe Love Golf!(2007),[114]Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege(2015),[115]andFortnite Battle Royale(2017).[116]Jill appears as anon-playablecameo in 2004'sUnder the Skin,[117]is one of the 'Spirit'power-upsinSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate(2018),[118]and a robot dressed as Jill makes a cameo reference inAstro's Playroom(2020).[119]

Jill features innovelizationsof the films and games[120]and plays a supporting role in the first novel,Resident Evil: Caliban Cove(1998), in a series byS. D. Perry.[121]InResident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy(1998), Perry's novelization of the original game, Jill's Delta Force background is not mentioned; before her career in law enforcement, she is said to have acted as an accomplice for her father Dick Valentine, a professional thief.[122]Several comic books based on the games were released,[123]and she is a character inBandai'sResident Evil Deck Building Card Game(2011).[124]Merchandise featuring Jill include action figures, figurines and a gun replica.[125]The character was featured inResident Evil-themed attractions atUniversal Studios JapanandUniversal Orlando'sHalloween Horror Nights.[126]Capcom's themed restaurant Biohazard Cafe & Grill S.T.A.R.S., which opened inShibuya,Tokyo, in 2012, sold a noodle dish named after her.[h]

Reception and legacy

A cosplayer recreating Jill's redesigned appearance fromResident Evil 5as a brainwashed antagonist, which was scrutinized by MacCallum-Stewart in her writings[25][40]

Game publications, including the 2011 version of theGuinness World Records Gamer's Edition,[128]described Jill Valentine among the most popular and iconic video game characters.[129][130][131]At the 2013Penny Arcade Expo, journalistsand game developers nominated her as one of the top-three lead characters of Western and Japaneserole-playing video games.[132]Magazines praised her as the most likableResident Evilcharacter,[133][134]with the most believable and consistentstory arcin the series.[135]She was also identified as one of the all-time greatestmascotsof thevideo game industry,[i]as a tough, strong and attractive female character who could appeal to a broaddemographic.[130]

Critics commented that Jill was not oversexualized in her initial appearances.[136][137][138][139]She was highlighted as an example of the series' female characters who were not judged solely ongender,[136]and for having "the most sensible design" for a female character of the mid-to-late 1990s.[138]Her professional relationship with Chris was celebrated for its basis in loyalty rather than romance[140]and its balance in their personalities: Jill's intellect and Chris's brawn.[141]Female digital critics felt that several of Jill's features undermine her role as a heroine and weaken her as a protagonist – specifically that her body shape is unrealistic and not reflective of her military background or physical training, noting that she was the only member of her team in the original game not to wear abulletproof vest.[142][143]The extent to which her appearance changed over the course of the game series has been criticized as excessive,[33]with theResident Evil 3outfit derided for deviating too much from Mikami's initial militaristic iteration of the character.[88]InTropes vs. Women in Video Games, feminist media criticAnita Sarkeesiancriticized Jill's alternate costumes as too revealing, particularly the pirate costume inResident Evil: Revelations.[144]She also cited Jill's movement inRevelationsas an example of female characters who walk in an overtly sexualized manner.[145]

MacCallum-Stewart said the firstResident Evilgame became famous for its "extremely clunky dialogue and voice acting, an element which lent the otherwise suspenseful game an element of charm that endeared it to players".[40]Although she explains that the weak dialogue might be attributed to poor translation of the original Japanese text, she said this inadvertently helped differentiate the series from its rivals.[40]Several lines from the game achieved enduring popularity: "You were almost a Jill sandwich",[146]a quip delivered in awkward voiceover by Barry Burton after a falling ceiling trap almost crushes Jill, was revived as anInternet memea decade after the game's release; it became the subject offan artdepicting Jill in or as a sandwich.[147]Capcomreferenced the linein several of their later games, includingDead Rising(2006),[148][149]Resident Evil: Uprising(2009),[147]andResident Evil: Revelations 2(2015).[150]Another piece of dialogue spoken by Burton – "And, Jill, here's a lock pick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you" – also gained notoriety.[151][152]The quote has beenparodiedfor containing an excessive amount ofsilence between words.[153]It was removed from later editions.[154]

  4. ^Shinji Mikami:"We shot the opening movie in the Tama River side of Japan. In the beginning of the movie, Jill makes her face look like she is scared, but she was not [supposed to be]. The actress for Jill was only a high-school girl at the time and she had to run around outside in the middle of the night and got mosquito bites, so she made that face; 'I wanna go home!' She was just an immature kid. That cheap shot was totally my mistake. I didn't have enough time and money, also I should have picked the actors judging on performances but it's too late now of course."[51]

Barry said that he was going to send his family to Canada first and then meet up with Chris after that. I have decided to remain in Raccoon City for the time being because I know that the research facility here will be vital to this case. After gathering as much information as I can, I will regroup with Barry and Chris in about a month. I know that is when my true struggle will begin..."[76]
