Joseph David IrvinOBEis an ex-charity leader who until 2020 was the chief executive ofLiving Streets,the UK charity that campaigns for pedestrians.[1][2]

Career

He started his career as policy officer for theTrades Union Congressbefore moving onto various roles including Director of Education and Research at theTransport and General Workers' Union.He has in the past served as Director of Parliamentary Affairs for theRSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds)and Director of Public Affairs forBAA[3]

In 1997 he moved into the political arena as special advisor to Deputy Prime MinisterJohn Prescottand eventually went on to replaceJohn McTernanas Political Secretary toGordon Brownduring his term asPrime Minister of the United Kingdom.[4]After leaving politics in 2012 he became CEO of theNational Association for Voluntary and Community Action.[5]

Irvin was appointedOfficer of the Order of the British Empire(OBE) in the2020 New Year Honoursfor services to active travel and charities.[6]

Personal life

He is married toDiana Holland,Assistant General Secretary ofUnite trade unionand Treasurer of the Labour Party.
