Joe Sawyer(bornJoseph Sauers,August 29, 1906 – April 21, 1982) was a Canadian film actor.[1]He appeared in more than 200 films between 1927 and 1962,[2]and was sometimes billed under his birth name.

Early life

Sawyer was born August 29, 1906, asJoseph Sauer[3]inGuelph,Ontario,Canada. His parents were German. In his 20s he went to Los Angeles to pursue a career in films.[4]

Career

Sawyer gained acting experience in thePasadena Playhouse.[5]Productions in which he performed there includedQuinneys,The Wolves,andWhite Wings.[6]

Popular roles that he portrayed includedSergeantBiff O'Hara in theRin Tin Tintelevisionprogram,[2]a film, and onradio.OnStories of the Centuryin 1954, he portrayedButch Cassidy,a role which he repeated in the 1958 episode "The Outlaw Legion" of thesyndicatedwesternseriesFrontier Doctor.Sawyer also appeared onABC's,Maverick,Sugarfoot,Peter Gunn,andSurfside 6as well asNBC'sBat Masterson.

Death

Sawyer died April 21, 1982, inAshland, Oregon,fromliver cancer.He was 75.[5]His interment was in Oregon.
