John Scott Martin(1 April 1926 – 6 January 2009)[1]was anEnglishactor born inToxteth,Liverpool,Lancashire.He made many film, stage and television appearances, but one of his most famous, though unseen, roles was as aDalekoperator in the long-running BBC science fiction television seriesDoctor Who.

Career

Martin operated Daleks from 1965'sThe Chasethrough 1988'sRemembrance of the Daleksmaking him the longest-running Dalek operator. He worked with eight different actors in the title role of the Doctor fromWilliam HartnelltoSylvester McCoy,and alsoRichard Hurndall,who took on the role of the First Doctor in "The Five Doctors".Typically, Martin would operate the first Dalek when a group of three entered a scene, due largely to his long tenure on the programme.[2]He also operated otherDoctor Whomonster costumes including the insectoidZarbi[3]inThe Web Planet,and the roboticMechanoidsinThe Chase.Martin made his first on screen appearance inThe Dæmons,in which he appeared (uncredited) as Charlie, postmaster of Devils End, in three episodes. Martin also had a cameo in the BBC seriesThe Tripods.

Some of his other television credits include various roles inI, Claudius,Z-CarsandSoftly, Softly,[3]as well as a TV Technician inQuatermass and the Pit,as Brown inSome Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em,as a waiter inThe Good Life,as Hawke inPoldark(1977) and as Rico Vivaldi in five episodes of the 2004 comedyMine All Mine,written byRussell T. Davies.

His film credits include a dancing instructor in a brief scene inAlan Parker'sfilm adaption ofPink Floyd'sThe Wall,and small roles inAli G Indahouse,Little Shop of Horrors,Erik the VikingandThe Crimson Permanent Assurancesegment ofThe Meaning of Life.

He appeared on the West End stage in shows likeKismet,Oliver!andThe Streets of London.In theManchester Opera Houseproduction ofFiddler on the RooffeaturingTopolin the starring role, he played the Rabbi.[1]

Death

Martin suffered fromParkinson's diseasein later life.[1]He died on 6 January 2009.
