John William Furphy(born 7 December 2004) is an Australianbasketballplayer for theIndiana Pacersof theNational Basketball Association(NBA). He playedcollege basketballfor theKansas Jayhawks.He was drafted by theSan Antonio Spurswith the 35th overall pick in the2024 NBA draftand later traded to the Indiana Pacers.

Early life and career

Furphy was born and grew up inMelbourne,Australia.[1]He was awarded a sport scholarship to Maribyrnong Sports Academy[2]and he completed his academic studies atMaribyrnong College,graduating in 2022.[3]

In 2021, Furphy played two games for the Hawthorn Magic in theBig V.[4][5]In 2022, he played nine games forMelbourne Universityin the Big V Division One[6]before moving toCanberrawhere he played three games for theBA Centre of Excellence(CoE) in theNBL1.[4]With the CoE in 2023,[7]he averaged 14.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in 12 games during theNBL1 season.[8]

College career

Furphy committed to playing college basketball in the United States forKansas.[9]

Furphy entered his freshman season at Kansas as a key reservewing.[10]He made his first college start on 13 January 2024, against ninth-rankedOklahomaand scored seven points in a 78–66 win.[11]Furphy was named to theBig 12 ConferenceAll-Freshman team at the end of the regular season.[12]Following his freshman season, Furphy declared for the2024 NBA draftand received a green room invite.[13]

On 27 June 2024, Furphy was selected with the 35th overall pick by theSan Antonio Spursin the2024 NBA draft,however, immediately on draft night, he was traded to theIndiana Pacersin exchange for the 36th overall pick,Juan Núñezand cash.[14][15]On 7 July, he signed with the Pacers.[16]
