Background
[edit]Johren was a "massive"[1]bay horse owned and bred byHarry Payne Whitney.He was sired bySpearmint,the 1906Grand Prix de Pariswinner and a son ofAustralian Racing Hall of FameandNew Zealand Racing Hall of Fameinaugural inducteeCarbine.As well as being the sire of theBelmont Stakes-winning fillyTanya,Johren's damsireMeddlerwas the damsire ofU.S. Racing Hall of FameinducteeGrey Lag.
Harry Whitney had racing operations atNewmarketinEnglandand in his native United States. He brought Johren as a yearling to hisBrookdale FarminLincroft, New Jersey,where his race training was overseen by headtrainerJames G. Rowe Sr.
Racing career
[edit]Johren was not sufficiently developed to race at age two and started his three-year-old racing season with nine straight losses before getting his first win. In the pre-U.S. Triple Crownera, he was not entered in the 1918Kentucky Derby.Entered in thePreakness Stakes,Johren ran fourth and then won theBelmont Stakes,defeating the British-bred Preakness winnerWar Cloud.By the summer of 1918, the colt had become one of the dominant horses in American racing, winning a number of other important races including the 1918Latonia Derbyin late June, in which he beatKentucky DerbywinnerExterminatorby three lengths.[2]He was beaten by War Cloud in the Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct in July.[1]
Stud career
[edit]Retired tostudduty, Johen had modest success as asire.His most noteworthy progeny was Edisto, who raced for theSeagram Stablesand won several races in Canada and the U.S. Johren died in 1932.[3]
