JuarezorJuarez and Maximilian(Spanish:Juárez y Maximiliano) is a 1934Mexicanhistoricaldrama filmdirected byMiguel Contreras TorresandRaphael J. Sevilla.The film is set during theFrench intervention in Mexicoduring the 1860s, and features the battle betweenMaximilian I of MexicoandBenito Juárez.
The theme is based on the 1925 playFranz WerfelcalledJuarez and Maximilian.The theme is used again in the 1939 American filmJuarez.It was one of the few major commercial successes for theMexican film industryin the earlysound era,[2]before the beginning of theGolden Age of Mexican cinema.
It was one of the most expensive Mexican films made at that time.[1]
