Julie Anne Etchingham(born 21 August 1969)[1][2]is an English journalist who works as a television newsreader withITV News.A graduate ofNewnham College, Cambridge,Etchingham joined the BBC as a trainee after completing her studies, and went on to present the children's news programmeNewsroundin 1994. She joinedSky Newsin 2002, and also presented editions ofFive Newswhen Sky won the contract to produce news programming forChannel 5in 2005.

Etchingham is currently a newscaster onITV News at Tenand has been since 2008. She also presented the current affairs programmeTonightfrom 2010 until 2022 when she announced that she would still occasionally be reporting for the show.[3]She was voted "Presenter of the Year" at theRoyal Television Societyjournalism awards in 2010 and 2016.

Life and career[edit]

Etchingham was born and raised inLeicester,Leicestershire,where both her parents were teachers.[4]She was raised as aRoman Catholic,[5]and educated at the city'sEnglish Martyrs Catholic School.[5][6]After school she attendedNewnham Collegeat theUniversity of Cambridgewhere she gained aBA (Honours)degree in English.[7][8]She was the first girl from her school to attend Cambridge, and while reading English there was taught byGermaine Greer.[9]She also co-presentedBBC Radio Cambridgeshire's student programmeOn the Edge,produced byIan Peacock.[10]She got her first job in journalism withBBC Radio Leicesterwhile still at school, and joined theBBCgraduate programme from university.[5]

Working atBBC Midlands,Etchingham became a presenter onMidlands Today,[11]but soon moved on to present national programmes after moving to London. Her credits at the BBC include BBC'sBreakfast News,Newsround(where she beat 1,000 other competitors to the job in 1994) and the corporation's long runningHolidayprogramme.[4]Etchingham joined Sky News in 2002, where she hosted a number of shows for the channel, includingSky News Today.[5]She was also an occasional presenter onFive Newsafter Sky took over as news provider forChannel Fivein January 2005.[12]

On 29 October 2007, during a speech byDavid Cameron,Etchingham's microphone was left open and an aside was accidentally broadcast during live coverage of theConservativeleader's address. Speaking on the issue of immigration, Cameron said: "Let me outline the action that a Conservative government would take. As we have seen, some of the increase in population size results from natural change – birth rates, death rates. Here our policy should be obvious..." At this point, Etchingham was heard to say: "Extermination".[13] Sky News said afterwards that her comment was "regrettable".[13]Etchingham later described the incident as "not my finest hour. I apologised to Cameron personally".[9]Cameron took the incident in good jest, recorded a parody of the incident for Etchingham's 40th birthday and had a toyDalekdelivered to her home.[5]

On 31 October 2007, ITV confirmed that in January 2008 Etchingham would move to present the relaunchedNews at Tenwith SirTrevor McDonald.[14][15]The programme returned on 14 January.[16]In June 2009, it was reported in the media that the President of Pakistan,Asif Ali Zardari,had stopped a plane from flying out of Pakistan after he heard Etchingham was running late after an interview between the two.[17]In October 2009, it was announced that Etchingham would present a relaunchedTonightprogramme from early 2010 – with the show airing once a week on Thursday nights.[18]

In April 2011, Etchingham andPhillip Schofieldco-hostedITV's coverage of thewedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.[19]It was announced in April 2012 that she and Schofield would present the broadcaster's coverage ofthe Queen's Diamond Jubileein June.[20][21]In March 2013, she travelled to Rome to provide coverage of theelectionofPope Francisfor ITV News.[22]

In March 2015, it was announced that Etchingham would chair atelevised leaders debatefor ITV ahead of the2015 UK general election,the only leaders debate featuring Prime MinisterDavid Cameronto be held that year. The programme was calledThe ITV Leaders' Debate.[23]The debate took place on 2 April. Andrew Pettie ofThe Telegraphdescribed Etchingham's presenting style as "composure itself", adding that it was "a bit robotic but this was no bad thing: it was refreshing to see a TV interviewer resolutely refusing to hog the limelight."[24]She later co-presented the ITV coverage of the general election withTom Bradby.[25]In October 2015,News at Tenrelaunched and returned to the single newscaster format, with former political editorTom Bradbybecoming the programme's new main presenter. Etchingham continues on the programme as Deputy Anchor, sharing the role withRageh Omaar.Etchingham also files special reports for the programme.[26]

In June 2016, she chairedCameron and Farage Live: The EU ReferendumandThe ITV Referendum DebateforITV News.[27]In May 2017, Etchingham returned to chairThe ITV Leaders' Debateahead of the2017 UK general election.[28]On 5 June 2017, Etchingham conducted an interview withPrime MinisterTheresa May,in which she talked aboutrunning through fields of wheat,which became ameme.[29]On 3 July 2017, Etchingham presented a special edition ofNews at Tencelebrating 50 years of the programme. She interviewed SirTrevor McDonald,a former presenter of the programme.[30]

On 19 May 2018, Etchingham co-presented ITV's coverage of thewedding of Prince Harry and Meghan MarklewithPhillip Schofield.[31]On 9 July 2019, Etchingham presentedBritain’s Next Prime Minister: The ITV Debate.The programme was broadcast live fromDock 10,MediaCityUK.[32][33]On 17 April 2021, she co-presented ITV's coverage of thefuneral of Prince Philip, Duke of EdinburghwithTom Bradby.[34]In a ceremony on 30 October 2023, Etchingham was appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor forBirmingham Newman University.The Pro-Chancellor role is an advocate and ambassador of the University and represents the University in a ceremonial and representative capacity.[35]

Awards[edit]

Etchingham was voted "Presenter of the Year" at theRoyal Television Societyjournalism awards in February 2010. She was the first woman to win the award.[36]She won it again in February 2016.[37]In April 2016, Etchingham was named "Broadcast Journalist of the Year" by the London Press Club.[38]

Personal life[edit]

In 1997, Etchingham married the television producer Nick Gardner. The couple have two sons, both of whom were born inHammersmith and Fulham,London.[39]

Charity[edit]

Etchingham is vice president of the stillbirth charityAbigail's Footsteps.[40]She is also a patron of the London homeless charity, Caritas Anchor House.[41]Since 2018, Etchingham has also taken on the role of president at theWomen of the Year Lunchand awards.
