Julie Kedzie(born March 18, 1981) is an American retiredmixed martial artist.[3]She is a third degree black belt inTae Kwon Doand specializes inBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu.[4]Kedzie was Greg Jackson's personal assistant atJackson's Mixed Martial Arts.[5]Kedzie has been working forInvicta Fighting Championshipsas a fight commentator and interviewer. In December 2013, Kedzie became the new matchmaker for Invicta FC.[6]
Early life
[edit]Kedzie was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved toBloomington,Indiana when she was twelve so her mother could pursue a doctorate in neurobiology fromIndiana University Bloomington.Her sister is the geneticistJennifer Raff.[7]
She and her sister were enrolled in Tae Kwon Do by her father when Julie was five years old.[1]
She studied under Steve and Linda Scott at Monroe County Martial Arts. She later returned to teach a one-time mixed martial arts class.
She has a Bachelor of Arts inEnglish Literaturefrom Indiana University Bloomington.[7]
She graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in Nonfiction Writing from theUniversity of Iowain 2019.[8]
Mixed martial arts career

[edit]Kedzie rose to prominence inmixed martial artson November 19, 2005, when she won the one-nightHOOKnSHOOTWomen's Grand Prix inEvansville, Indiana.
EliteXC
[edit]On February 10, 2007, Kedzie faced undefeated rising starGina Caranoin a featured bout atEliteXC: Destiny,which aired live onShowtime.She was defeated by Carano, but the fight received Fight of the Night honours.[9]
Independent promotions
[edit]Following theElite XCfight, Kedzie defeated Kelly Kobold at BodogFight - Vancouver on August 24, 2007. She won the fight by unanimous decision.[10]
Kedzie later signed a contract with the American Fight League,[11]but the promotion folded and Kedzie was released from her contract.
Jackson's MMA Series
[edit]Kedzie was scheduled to faceSarah D'Alelioat Jackson's MMA Series 2 on September 4, 2010,[12]but the fight was canceled after Kedzie signed on to take part in the filming of theUltimate Women Challengereality show.[13]The show never made it to air, and 7 contestants sued the producers, claiming they were never paid.[14]
During the filming of the Ultimate Women Challenge, Kedzie facedKaitlin Youngon September 24, 2010. She was defeated by split decision.[15]
Kedzie's fight withSarah D'Aleliowas then rebooked for Jackson's MMA Series 3 on December 18, 2010 inAlbuquerque, New Mexico.[16]She defeated D'Alelio via unanimous decision.[17]
She then faced Kaitlin Young in a five-round title rematch at Jackson's MMA Series 4 on April 9, 2011.[18]Kedzie defeated Young by unanimous decision to become Jackson's MMA Series Women's Bantamweight Champion.[19]
Strikeforce
[edit]Kedzie was scheduled to fightAmanda Nunesat theStrikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdumevent on June 18, 2011, inDallas, Texas.[20]The bout, however, was cancelled after Nunes sustained a foot injury.[21]
Kedzie made herStrikeforcedebut againstAlexis Davison July 30, 2011 atStrikeforce: Fedor vs. HendersoninHoffman Estates, Illinois.[22][23]She lost the fight via unanimous decision.[24]
Kedzie was expected to faceGermaine de Randamieas part of the Strikeforce Challengers 19 card on September 23, 2011, but withdrew due to injury.[25]
Kedzie facedMiesha TateatStrikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufmanon August 18, 2012.[26]She was defeated by submission due to an armbar in the third round.[27][28]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
[edit]Kedzie'sUltimate Fighting Championship(UFC) debut was againstGermaine de RandamieatUFC on Fox 8on July 27, 2013.[29]She lost the fight by split decision.[30][31]
Kedzie faced Bethe Correia atUFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Bigfooton December 7, 2013.[32]She lost the fight via split decision and subsequently announced her retirement from mixed martial arts competition via Twitter.[33]
Kedzie announced that she is officially retired on April 24, 2021 via Twitter.[34]
