Julien Maury(born 1978 inParis) andAlexandre Bustillo(born 1975 inSaint-Cloud,France) are French filmmakers[1]who work together on their projects. They are known for their work in thehorrorgenre, and list their influences asDario Argento,Roman Polanski,Clive BarkerandJohn Carpenter.[2][3]
Life and career
[edit]Julien Maury graduated from l’École Supérieure de Réalisation Audiovisuelle. He worked for French television before directing documentaries, music videos and short films. Alexandre Bustillo graduated fromUniversité Paris XIIIwith an M.A. in cinema,[4]before working as a journalist for several magazines includingMad Movies.[5]The two met each other through a mutual friend.[6]
Their first film wasInside,a controversialhorror filmabout apregnantwoman stalked by a madwoman who wants her child for herself. Both men co-directed and Bustillo wrote the script. The film was cited as an example of thenew wave of French horror filmsand was a critical success that brought international attention on Maury and Bustillo.[citation needed]
After the success ofInside,Maury and Bustillo were attached to at separate times toHalloween II,the sequel toRob Zombie'sremakeofJohn Carpenter'sHalloweenas well as theremakeforClive Barker'sHellraiser.In both cases, they left the project.[citation needed]
Their subsequent filmLividwas released 2011. The film was initially intended to be Bustillo and Maury's English-language debut and shot in theUnited Kingdombut they moved to a lower-budget French production after they found that they were losing creative control over their story.[7]
