Julio Ernesto Granda Zúñiga(born February 25, 1967) is aPeruvianchessgrandmasterand four-time champion of the Americas.

Career

Born inCamaná,he learned how to play chess at the age of five. In 1980 he won theWorld Infant CupinMazatlàn,Mexico.[1]In 1984 Granda won thePan American Junior Chess ChampionshipinLima.[2]By the age of 19, he had obtained the title of Grandmaster by theFIDE,the World Chess Federation, after surpassing the chess rating of 2500. He finished 1st withBent LarsenatMar del Plata1993. He is a five-timechess champion of Peru,winning in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2002.[3]Granda won the 4thAmerican Continental ChampionshipatCali2007 ontie-breakbetween the five first-place finishers at 8/11.[4]This victory qualified him for theChess World Cup 2007where he lost his first round match toArkadij Naiditsch½–1½. In 2008 he won the 2nd Iberoamerican Championship inLinares,Spain by defeating in the finalEduardo Iturrizaga2½-1½.[5]

In December 2009, he tied for 1st–4th withGeorg Meier,Viktor LázničkaandKiril Georgievin the 19th MagistralPamplonaTournament.[6]In 2010, he won the 5th Torneo Abierto inGuadalajara.[7]In 2011 he tied for 2nd–7th withAleksander Delchev,Ivan Šarić,Pablo Almagro Llamas,Maxim TurovandMihail Marinthe 31st Villa deBenasqueOpen.[8]In theChess World Cup 2013inTromsø,Norway, Granda reached round four, after knocking outHrant Melkumyan,Peter LekoandAnish Giri.He was however defeated byFabiano Caruanawith two losses.[9]

Julio Granda played for Peru in theChess Olympiadsof 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2014.[10]

Granda tied for first place withSamuel Shankland,Alexander Shabalov,Rafael Leitao,Isan Reynaldo Ortiz SuarezandAlan Pichotat the9th American Continental Chess Championshipin 2014. Thanks to a better tiebreak score he took the gold medal. To earn a spot in theFIDE World Cup,he played arapidplayoff with the five other players who finished joint first. He came second with 3/5 and qualified for theWorld Cup 2015.[11]Here he knocked outAlexandr Fierin the first round,Cristobal Henriquez Villagrain the second, then he lost toRadoslaw Wojtaszekin the third. In 2017, Granda won the 50+ section of theWorld Senior Chess ChampionshipinAcqui Terme,Italy.[12]
