Julio Reyes Copello(born April 26, 1969) is aColombianproducer,songwriterandrecord engineer.Throughout his career he has worked with various artists such asJennifer López,Marc Anthony,Thalía,Chayanne,Kany García,Alejandro Sanz,Paula Arenas,Laura PausiniandPablo Alborán,among others, as well as receiving fourGrammy Awardsand sevenLatin Grammy Awards.

Early life

Reyes Copello was born in 1969 inCúcuta,Colombiaand grew up inBogotá,his interest for music started from an early age learning howto play the piano with his mother. He has two brothers, Gabriel, the president of the Colombian television networkRCN,andGerardo,an investigative journalist and one of the recipients of thePulitzer Prize for Investigative Reportingin 1999.[1]

Career

After graduating from theColegio San Bartolomé La Merced,he entered to thePontifical Xavierian Universityto study music.[1]In 1996, he composed the music for the miniseriesLeche,for which he won the India Catalina Award for Best Music the next year.[2]He later received a scholarship for a master's degree in Media Writing and Production at theUniversity of MiamiinMiami,the city where he lives since 1997, following his years of study, he was chosen byJorge Calandrellito compose the arrangements for seven of the songs from the 2001 albumOur Favorite ThingsbyPlácido Domingo,the album featuredTony Bennett,Charlotte ChurchandVanessa Williamsalongside theVienna Symphony Orchestra.[3]

While inMiami,he met Andrés Recio, who would become his manager. After working as a songwriter for artists likeMalú,ThalíaandJerry Rivera,he metMarc Anthonyin 2004 with Colombian producerEstéfano,Copello would co-write songs like "Ahora Quien" and "Tu Amor Me Hace Bien" from Anthony's albumsAmar Sin MentirasandValió la Pena.[4]The former won theGrammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album,with Copello also receiving the award as one of the engineers of the album. His firstLatin Grammy Awardnomination came in 2003 for his work inAlexandre Pires'sEstrella Guía,the record was nominated forAlbum of the YearandBest Male Pop Vocal Albumat the4th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.

During the 2000s, he continued working with Latinamerican artists such asThalía,Ricky MartinandJennifer Lopez.In 2009, he was one of the composers of the music forTNT's medical drama seriesHawthorne.[5]In 2011, Copello metAlejandro Sanzafter a call withUniversal Music's president Jesús López, the meeting would result inLa Música No Se Toca,the tenth album by Sanz.[4]At the14th Annual Latin Grammy Awards,Copello received his firstsLatin Grammys,winning three,Record of the Yearfor Sanz's "Mi Marciana"andBest Contemporary Pop Vocal AlbumforLa Música No Se Toca,both as producer andBest Engineered AlbumforKany García'sself-titled albumas engineer.

In 2013, Copello founded the recording studio and label ArtHouse Records inMiami,producing albums by several artists such asPaula Arenas,Julio Pablo Vega,Mariana VegaandBrika,among others. Ever since his first nomination in 2003, Copello has won sevenLatin Grammy Awardsout of over thirty nominations, elevenAlbum of the Yearnominations, twelveRecord of the Yearnominations and fourProducer of the Yearnominations. Many albums produced by Copello have been highly successful, withJennifer López'sComo Ama una Mujer,Chayanne'sNo Hay Imposibles,Alejandro Sanz'sLa Música No Se TocaandRicky Martin'sA Quien Quiera Escucharpeaking at number one on theBillboard Top Latin Albumschart.[6][7][8][9]
