History

[edit]

The Kapiro block was a designatedKauri gumreserve after 1898[1]to restrict the harvesting of gum.[2]The gum was depleted by 1919, and suggestions were made to use the land for settlement of returning soldiers fromWorld War I,[3]or planting trees on it.[4]The land was covered with a noxious weed,hakea.[5]

An experimental farm was established in the late 1920s.[6][7]This was not promising at first,[8]but by the mid 1940s the experiment was much more successful.[9]Kapiro became a rich dairying area.[10]

A vineyard was established from 2007.[11]
