Karam Ibrahim Gaber(Egyptian Arabic:كرم ابراهيم جابر,born 1 September 1979) is anEgyptianGreco-Romanwrestler.He won the gold medal in theMen's Greco-Roman 96 kgat the2004 Summer Olympics.[1]Gaber won the silver medal at the 2003 World Championships. At the2012 London Olympics,he won his second Olympic medal, winning a silver.
Career
[edit]Gaber won at the 2004 Olympics Greco-Roman finals[2]with a gap of 12 points (12–1), having competed againstRamaz NozadzeofGeorgiawho won the silver andMehmet Özalof Turkey, whom Gaber defeated in the semifinals with 11 points (11–0). Gaber won the second gold medal forEgyptin Greco-Roman wrestling, the other being from the1928 Summer Olympics.[citation needed]
Gaber competed in amixed martial artsmatch againstKazuyuki Fujita(Greco-Roman Wrestling) atK-1'sDynamiteevent on 31 December 2004.[3]
Gaber wasEgypt's flagbearer at theOpening Ceremonyfor the2008 OlympicsinBeijing,although he failed to qualify for the quarter finals in Beijing. He won the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics.[4]
In 2015, Gaber was a favorite to win another world gold at the 2016 Olympics with long time personal coach Jakob Panotas.
In February 2024, he announced his retirement due to an injury which prevented him from competing at theAfrican Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournamentfor the2024 Summer Olympics,[5]and he reconsidered recently and participated in a championship for veterans[5]winning Gold Medal in 2023 and Bronze Medal in 2024.[6][7]
