Kareem Campbell(born November 14, 1973) is an American professionalskateboarder.He is known for popularizing the skateboard trick "The Ghetto Bird" which is anolliehardfliplate 180°.[1][2]

Skateboarding career

Kareem Campbell was an innovative professional skateboarder in the 1990s. He was featured in theWorld IndustriesvideosNew World Order,20 Shot Sequence,andTrilogy,which are regarded as classics to many skateboarders. He has been called the godfather of smoothstreetstyle.[3][4]He eventually went on to spawn another company of his own under theDwindle Distributionumbrella, though he continued to ride for World Industries.[5]He also helped found Axion Shoes.[6]After Menace, he went on to create City Stars Skateboards also under the same Dwindle Distribution umbrella. He still operates City Star Skateboards to this day.[7][8]

Campbell rose to mainstream fame in 1999 following his inclusion as a playable character in theTony Hawk's Pro Skatervideo game series.Tony Hawkalso credited him with increasing skateboarding's standing in the Black community.[9]Campbell would later reprise his role in the2020 remakeof the first two games in the series.[10]

Throughout his career Kareem has been sponsored by World Industries, Axion Shoes,Nixon Watches,Alphanumeric Clothing and more.[11]

Personal life

Campbell is fromHarlem, New York,and moved with his family toLos Angelesin his early youth.[12]

Campbell now resides inDallas, Texasand works in a variety of business ventures, notably real estate.[13]His nephew is professional skateboarder, musician, andOdd FutureassociateNa-kel Smith.[14]
