Karlie Elizabeth Kloss(born August 3, 1992)[4]is an American fashion model. She was aVictoria's Secret Angelfrom 2013 until 2015, when she resigned to study atNew York University.By 2019, Kloss had appeared on 40 internationalVoguecovers.

Apart from modeling, Kloss has an interest in technology. She founded the "Kode with Klossycamp, which aims to get young girls interested inSTEMfields. In 2019, she became the host of thereality competitiontelevision seriesProject Runway.She has signed with several top modeling agencies throughout her career, includingElite Model Management,Next Management,IMG Models,andThe Society.

Early life and education[edit]

Karlie Elizabeth Kloss was born on August 3, 1992, inChicago,Illinois[4]to Tracy Kloss, a freelance director, and Kurt Kloss, an emergency physician.[5]She has three sisters:[6]one older sister named Kristine and twin younger sisters named Kimberly and Kariann.[7]She moved toSt. Louis, Missouri,with her family in 1994.[4]In 2013, the family moved toGoshen, New Yorkto support her modeling career.[5]

Kloss attendedWebster Groves High SchoolinWebster Groves, Missouri,where she was a cheerleader during her freshman year and graduated in 2011.[8][9]In September 2015, she enrolled in theGallatin School of Individualized StudyatNew York University.[10]

Modeling career[edit]

2006–2010: Beginnings and modeling breakthrough[edit]

Kloss was discovered at a local benefit runway show in 2005.[11]In 2006, at age 14, she posed for photographer David Leslie Anthony in a cover and editorial spread titled "Almost Famous," for the June issue ofScene Magazine.[12]Elite Model ManagementChicago[a]forwarded hertear sheetsto their New York office, which signed her.[14]

Kloss's first[failed verification]credited modeling shoot was photographed byArthur ElgortforTeen Vogue.[15]One of her first modeling stints was a shoot forAbercrombie KidsbyBruce Weber.[5]In January 2008, she left Elite Model Management and signed withNext Management.[16]She walked 31 runways inNew York Fashion Week,[b]notably walking as an exclusive forCalvin Klein,[20]closing forMarc Jacobs,opening forCarolina Herrera,and occupying both spots atDoo.Ri.[21]After New York, she walked 20 shows inMilanand 13 inParisfor the fall 2008 collections, totaling 64 shows in a single season.[16][22]

Kloss found herself in a legal dispute when Elite Model Management, believing they were responsible for launching her career, sued Next Management for allegedly stealing her away and offering her 'improper compensation.'[16]The case was eventually settled out of court.[23]After four years of being represented by Next Management, Kloss signed withIMG Models,simultaneously leaving Mother Model Management in St. Louis.[24][25][26]In 2009,Vogue Parisnamed her one of the "top 30 models of the 2000s."[27][28]

Kloss has appeared in editorials for American and KoreanW,AmericanElle,Allure,i-D,French and JapaneseNuméro,Vanity Fair,Dazed & Confused;[citation needed]and American,[29]Australian,[30]Italian,[31]French,[32]British,[33]Korean,[34]German,[35]Japanese,[36]Chinese,[37]Turkish,[38]Portuguese,[39]Teen,[40]and Latin American editions ofVoguemagazine.[41]She notably appeared on 12 internationalVoguecovers, includingVogue Italia,in a five-year span.[31]She appeared on the cover ofTeen VoguealongsideChanel ImanandAli Michaelin February 2008[31]and by herself in May 2010.[40]

Kloss made her first venture into television when she appeared in theGossip Girlepisode "Belles de Jour"as herself.[42]She became a muse for fashion designerJohn Gallianoand has appeared inDiorand John Galliano campaigns. She opened both the Christian Dior Haute Couture and Dior Resort shows in the Spring/Summer 2010 season. In Spring/Summer 2011, she opened ten shows and closed eight.[citation needed]

2011–2014: Recognition and success[edit]

Kloss renewed her contract with Christian Dior for the third season in a row in 2011.[43]Photographer Gabrielle Revere was commissioned byLifemagazine to photograph her for the cover of a special print issue handed out during New York Fashion Week in September 2011.[44][45][46]The photo story inside the issue was photographed during the summer of 2011 and shows her at couture shows in Paris, New York City, and her hometown of St. Louis.[45][47]That fall, she made her debut in theVictoria's Secret Fashion Show.[48]

In 2012, Kloss was featured on the September covers ofBritish Vogue,[49]Japanese Vogue,[36]Harper's BazaarRussia,[50][51]andNuméro.[52]She appeared in campaign ads forJuicy Couture,[53]Stefanel,[54]Elie Saab,[55]andJean Paul Gaultier.[56][57]She co-hosted the revival of theMTVseriesHouse of Stylewith fellow modelJoan Smalls.[58]Just before appearing in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2012, Kloss had her long hair cut into a bob, which was subsequently called the "Karlie".[59][60]One of her outfits was cut out of the Victoria's Secret broadcast as it contained a Native Americanheaddressthat was deemed offensive.[61]

In 2013, Kloss was the face of Donna Karan, Lacoste, and Lanvin campaigns. Kloss worked withVictoria's Secreton their 2013 summer swimwear video.[62]She was also the red carpet host of the2013 MTV Movie Awardspre-show.[63]In April, Kloss starred alongsideDaria Strokous,Monika Jagaciak,andIris Strubeggerin Louis Vuitton's Alma bag campaign.[64][65]In 2013, Kloss was named as one of the new ambassadors forCoach, Inc.and starred in the accessory maker's fall 2013 campaign.[66]

Kloss was the face of Jean Paul Gaultier,Nike,Donna Karan,Lancaster, and theChanelCoco Noir fragrance campaigns in 2014.[67]She also collaborated with Frame Denim to design the Forever Karlie jeans collection. In summer 2014, Kloss worked withWarby Parkerto design the Karlie Kloss x Warby Parker eyewear line, the proceeds of which benefitedEdible Schoolyard NYC.[68]In September 2014,L'Oreal Parisannounced that they had signed Kloss as their new face.[69]She was featured on the September 2014 cover ofAmerican VoguewithJoan Smalls,Cara Delevingne,Arizona Muse,Edie Campbell,Imaan Hammam,Fei Fei Sun,Vanessa Axente,andAndreea Diaconuas "The Instagirls!"[70]

2015-present: After Victoria's Secret[edit]

In 2015, Kloss left Victoria's Secret. She would go on to cite concerns with their messaging to young women as a motivation for her departure.[71] That year, Kloss appeared on the March cover ofAmerican Voguewith singer-songwriterTaylor Swift.[29]She portrayed the role of "Knockout"[72]in the music video for Swift's song "Bad Blood",which premiered at the2015BillboardMusic Awards.[73]Kloss also featured in several video segments during Swift's1989 World Tour[74][75]and appeared live on stage with her atLondon'sHyde Parkon June 27[76]and at theMetLife StadiuminEast Rutherford, New Jerseyon July 11.[77]In March 2015, Kloss starred in the music video forChic's "I'll Be There",directed byInez van LamsweerdeandVinoodh Matadin.[78]On July 21, 2015, she started aYouTubechannel,Klossy,[79]featuring weeklyvlogsand Q&A videos, with help from her close friend, filmmakerCasey Neistat.[80]

Kloss in 2019

In May 2016, Kloss was named the new face ofSwarovskifor a two-year contract, replacing fellow Victoria's Secret alumnaMiranda Kerr.[81][82]In April 2017, she appeared as a correspondent on theNetflixseriesBill Nye Saves the World.[83]Kloss was featured inVogue's March 2017 issue styled as ageisha[84]and received criticism forcultural appropriation;[84][85]she posted a public apology for the spread.[86]In Fall 2017, Kloss announced a new TV show,Movie Night with Karlie Kloss,airing onFreeformin winter 2017.[87]On May 24, 2017 Kloss won theDiane von Furstenberg Inspiration Award.[88]

In April 2018, Kloss was announced as Estée Lauder's newest global spokesmodel[89]andbrand ambassador.[90]In October 2018, Kloss confirmed that she would be stepping intoHeidi Klum's shoes on theseventeenth seasonofProject Runwayas the host and executive producer. Of the show, she said, "I could not be more excited to host and produce a series that provides a platform to aspiring American designers as they pursue their creative and entrepreneurial dreams."[91][92]

Kloss ranks on the "New Supers" and "Money Girl" lists on Models.com.[93][94]Her runway walk is often described as powerful,[95]distinguished by her height, precision, fluidity, and serious, sultry expression.[96]She has described it as a "moody gait".[97]

Kloss collaborated withMomofuku Milk Barto create 'Karlie's Kookies,' a special recipe sold at DKNY Soho during Fashion's Night Out inNew York City;proceeds went toFEED Projects,where 10 meals were donated per tin of cookies sold.[98]She also led a group of high profile investors in purchasing the fashion magazineWin 2020.[99]In November 2023, she acquired British fashion magazinei-DfromVice Media Groupand became its chief executive officer.[100]She is also an investor in the probiotic companySeed.[101]In 2020, Kloss was named a trustee ofBarnard Collegefor a four-year term.[102]In March 2024, she and her husbandJoshua KushnerrevivedLifemagazine for print and digital distribution through Bedford Media in partnership withDotdash Meredith.[103]

Kloss is also acomputer programmer.She studiedRuby on Railsand otherweb developmenttechnologies atFlatiron Schoolin 2014.[104]She later narrated the season 2 episode "Coding" on the Netflix andVox Mediatelevision showExplainedin October 2019.[105]

In April 2015, Kloss launchedKode with Klossy,an initiative for teaching girls aboutcomputer science,with support from Estée Lauder.[106]She partnered with Flatiron School andCode.orgto offer an annual scholarship for young girls interested in computer science andsoftware engineeringas part of the initiative.[107]In 2015, she also launched a free two-week summer coding camp for girls aged 13–18, also calledKode With Klossy.The camp taught the basics of programming languages such asRuby,JavaScript,andSwift.By 2018,Kode with Klossyhad 50 camps in 25 US cities and had served upwards of 1,000 girls.[108]Program participants built fully functionalmobile appsorwebsiteswith the camp.[109]

Personal life[edit]

Kloss began dating businessman and investor Joshua Kushner in 2012.[110][111]She got engaged to Kushner in July 2018, a month after she hadconverted to Judaism,Kushner's religion.[112][113]The couple married on October 18, 2018, in upstate New York.[114][115]In June 2019, they held a second wedding celebration inWyoming.[116]She is related by marriage to Kushner's elder brotherJaredand his wifeIvanka Trump,members of thefamily of Donald Trump.[113][117]She has stated that she finds it "frustrating [...] that the spotlight is always shifted away from [her] career toward [her] relationship".[118]In December 2020, Kloss and Kushner purchased a home inMiami, Florida,for $23.5 million.[119]The couple have two sons: Levi Joseph, born in March 2021,[120][121]and Elijah Jude, born in July 2023.[122][123]

Kloss supportedHillary Clintonin the2016 United States presidential election[124]andJoe Bideninthe 2020 election.[125]She and her husband attended theMarch for Our Livesevent inWashington, D.C.in protest ofgun violencein March 2018.[126]She is afeminist[127]and has stated that her decision to leave Victoria's Secret was partly motivated by her feminist beliefs.[128]In 2024, Kloss gathered signatures for a bipartisan effort inMissourito put an abortion initiative on the ballot for2024.[129]

Kloss has been close friends withTaylor Swift.[130]In addition to appearing onstage and in music videos, the two at one time road tripped together,[131]had sleepovers and engaged in typical friend activities such as baking cookies.[132]Despite speculation, they have never been romantically involved.[133]
