TheMaster of Martyrs Battalions,orKata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada'(KSS;Arabic:كتائب سيد الشهداء,The Battalions of theMaster of Martyrs), officially the14th Brigade,is a radicalIraqiShiamilitia formed in 2013. Its stated mission is to protect "(Shia) shrines across the globe", preserve "Iraqiunity "and to" put an end to the sectarian conflict ". KSS is funded, trained and equipped byIRGC'sQuds ForceandHezbollah.

The group has been described as anIranianproxy, and is one of the original militias that formed thePopular Mobilization Forcesin 2014. The group has close ties toBadr OrganizationandIslamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.[14]

KSS is also active inSyria,where its main focus is the protection of theSayyidah Zaynab Mosquein a southern suburb ofDamascus.It militarily supports theal-AssadGovernment in theSyria Civil War,[3]and engaged in theBattle of Al-Shaykh Maskinin December 2014 in Syria in support of the Syrian army.[10]

On November 17, 2023, KSS and its leaderHashim Finyan Rahim al-Saraji(also known as Abu Ala al-Walai) were declaredSpecially Designated Global Terrorists(SDGT) under the counterterrorism authorityExecutive Order 13224by theUnited States.[15][16][17][18]Additionally, al-Saraji was placed onOffice of Foreign Assets Control'sSpecially Designated Nationals (SDN) List.[19]
