Kazakh Short U
Appearance
Kazakh Uo orStraight U with stroke(Ұ ұ; italics:Ұ ұ), is a letter of theCyrillic script.[1]InUnicode,this letter is called "Straight U with stroke".[1]Its form is theCyrillic letter Ue(Ү үҮ ү) with a horizontal stroke through it.
Usage
[edit]Kazakh Short U is used only in thealphabetof theKazakh language,[1]where it represents thenear-close near-back rounded vowel/ʊ/,like the pronunciation of the⟨oo⟩in "book ".[2]In other circumstances, it is used as a replacement for the former letter[clarification needed]to represent theclose front rounded vowel/y/in situations where it would be easily confused withCyrillic У у.[citation needed]It isromanizedas⟨ū⟩in Kazakh (2021 reform).
