Kirsten Soriano(formerly, Kirsten Broberg) was born April 19, 1979. She is an American composer fromWhite Bear Lake, Minnesota.Her music has been performed by theKronos Quartetstring quartet, theChicago Symphony OrchestraMusicNOW Ensemble, the Minnesota Orchestra, theSaint Paul Chamber Orchestra,The Crossingchoral ensemble, theInternational Contemporary Ensemble,Ensemble Dal Nienteand the Jack Quartet string quartet. In 2013, she was appointed assistant professor at theUniversity of North Texasand was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2020. She has served as director of undergraduate studies in the college of music at the University of North Texas since 2018.

Soriano earned a doctorate in music composition in 2009 fromNorthwestern Universityin Chicago as a student ofAugusta Read Thomas,Jay Alan YimandJason Eckardt.At Northwestern she also worked withKaija Saariaho,Tristan Murail,Oliver KnussenandJohn Adams.[1]Soriano was the recipient of a Fromm Commissioning Grant fromHarvard Universityin 2009. Her dissertationAn Analysis and Contextualization for Resonant Strands, a Cycle of Five Extractable Works for Piano, Bowed Piano and String QuartetanalyzesResonant Strandsand provides a historical context for her work by discussing cycles includingCarceri d'InvenzionebyBrian Ferneyhough,Les Espaces AcoustiquesbyGérard GriseyandOpening of the MouthbyRichard Barrett.[2]In 2013 she studied in Paris and southern France with Kaija Saariaho, Tristan Murail, and Philippe Hurel. In recent years she studied with nine-time Emmy-Award winning composer Bruce Broughton.

Style and work[edit]

Soriano's music focuses on timbre, and blendsspectral,neoromantic,minimalistandcomplexitytrends. Soriano has composed numerous cycles of extractable works includingResonant Strandsfor piano, bowed piano and string quartet;Naturafor mixed winds, strings and percussion; theWaters of Timefor soprano, flute, clarinet, piano, percussion, violin and cello;In Search of Imageryfor Sinfonietta; andCanticles from the Ends of the Earthfor choir and orchestra.

Soriano is the founder of the contemporary music organizationEnsemble Dal Niente[3]in Chicago. While Soriano was the Executive Director of Ensemble Dal Niente the ensemble received a Kranichsteiner Stipendium Preise, during the 45th Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt, Germany.[3]

Her music has been released by multiple labels including Navona Records[4]andInnova Records.[5]She was the featured composer for the New Music Box "Spotlight Session" composer for theAmerican Music Centerin May 2009.[6]Soriano won the 2016 Composer's Choice Award inSymphony Number One's third Call for Scores.[7]
