Knocknacarry(/ˌnɒknəˈkjɑːri/NOK-nə-KYAR-ee;fromIrishCnoc na Caraidh / Cnoc na Cora'hill of the weir' – referring to aweirdiverted off the River Dun which operated awatermill) is ahamletandtownland(of 155 acres) about 1 kilometre west ofCushendunand 17 kilometres south-east ofBallycastleinCounty Antrim,Northern Ireland.It is situated in the historicbaronyofGlenarm Lowerand thecivil parishofLayd.[2]In the2001 Censusit had a population of 138 people. It is within theCauseway Coast and Glens Borough Councilarea.
Knocknacarry lies within theAntrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,designated in 1988.[3]St. Ciaran's Primary School, which also serves the village of Cushendun and the wider local area, is in Knocknacarry.[4]
The river bed of theRiver Dunat Knocknacarry Bridge, north of Knocknacarry, is of scientific interest in the field ofmineralogyand an example of Cushendun Granite.[5]
