Kotoeri(ことえり)is a discontinued Japanese-languageinput methodthat came standard withOS Xand earlier versions ofClassic Mac OSuntilOS X Yosemite.Kotoeri(writtenことえりorNgôn tuyển り) literally means "word selection".

Overview

[edit]

The name "Kotoeri" comes from the chapter ofHahakigi[ja]inTale of Genji:"Even though I write a letter, I must carefully choose my words(Văn を thư けど, おほどかに ngôn tuyển りをし,fumi o kake do, ohodoka nikotoerio shi)".

In version 4, Kotoeri added support forAinu,[1]colloquial language andKansai dialectinput,[2]the ability to search forkanjiamong related characters using keyboard shortcuts, and the option to use key bindings similar toMicrosoft IME[de;jp].Additionally, it allowed converting accidentally typed kana into romanized letters by pressing theAnh sổ(alphanumeric) key twice and reverting confirmed characters to their original state by pressing theかな(kana) key twice.

Kotoeri supported key shortcuts including, for example, control+Jto convert toHiraganaandcontrol+Kto convert toKatakana.[3]For users who are accustomed to the initial version of Kotoeri, the assigned shortcuts can still be used effectively. Specifically,Option+Zshortcut can be used to convert text to Hiragana,[4]while⌥ Option+Xshortcut allows for conversion to Katakana.[5]These features ensure a seamless transition even for those familiar with the original version's shortcuts.

Starting fromOS X Yosemite(OS X version 10.10), which was released on October 16, 2014, Kotoeri was entirely replaced with a differentJapanese input method program[ja].[6]
