Kurt Weitzmann(March 7, 1904,Kleinalmerode(Witzenhausen,nearKassel) – June 7, 1993,Princeton, New Jersey)[1]was a German turned American art historian who was a leading figure in the study ofLate AntiqueandByzantine artin particular.
He attended the universities ofMünster,WürzburgandViennabefore moving toPrincetonin 1935, due to Nazi persecution. He is well known for the time he spent researching the icons and architecture atSaint Catherine's MonasteryinEgypt.He was elected to theAmerican Philosophical Societyin 1964 and theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciencesin 1978.[2][3]
