Lake Saroma(サロマ hồ,Saroma-ko),alsoSaroma Lagoon,[1]is acoastal lagoon(hence a body ofbrackishwater) inSaroma,Kitami,andYūbetsu.It is located inAbashiri Quasi-National Park.By area, the lake is thethird largestin Japan and the largest in Hokkaidō.
The name comes from theAinuplace nameSaruomahetsu,meaning "place of manyMiscanthusreeds and rushes ".[2]
Another nearby coastal lagoon isNotoro Lagoon,about 15 km (9.3 mi) to the east.
