Raymond Lamar "Racehorse" Davis(June 15, 1921 – February 23, 2008) was anAmerican footballplayer. He played professionally in theAll-America Football Conference(AAFC) with theMiami Seahawksin 1946 and theBaltimore Coltsfrom 1947 to 1949.
Biography
[edit]Lamar Davis was born inBrunswick, Georgia,where he attendedGlynn Academy.[1]He went to college at theUniversity of Georgiaand played for theBulldogsfrom 1940 until 1942. He was also a sprinter on the Georgia track and field team.[1]
He was a member of the1942 Georgia teamthat won theSoutheastern Conference(SEC) title and anational championship.His catch that season of a 65-yard touchdown pass thrown byFrank Sinkwichas the final gun sounded to help Georgia beatAuburn.[2]
Davis, nicknamed "Racehorse",[2]was drafted by thePhiladelphia Eaglesin the second round with the 12th overall pick of the1943 NFL draftbefore they merged with thePittsburgh Steelersto become the so-called "Steagles."He did not play for that team, however.[3]
Davis' career was interrupted byWorld War IIand he did not play professional football from 1942 through 1945. He returned in 1946 to play for theMiami Seahawksof theAll-America Football Conferenceand later for their successor organization, the firstBaltimore Colts.He was one of the few players from the Miami team that were retained by the new Colts organization.[1]
Listed at 6'1 "and 185 pounds, he played on offense and defense scoring numerous touchdowns as a receiver and making several interceptions as a pro.[3]
Davis resided inSt. Simons Island,Georgia, where he operated a business.[1]
Davis was inducted into the State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.[2]
