Lathburyis a village andcivil parishin theCity of Milton Keynes,Buckinghamshire,England.[2]It is about 1 km north ofNewport Pagnell,on the opposite side of the River Great Ouse, and about 8 km (5 miles) north-east ofCentral Milton Keynes.A meander of the River Great Ouse almost surrounds the village and parish, and theOuse Valley Waypasses through the parish.
History
[edit]The village name is anOld English languageword, meaning 'fortification built with laths or beams'. In theDomesday Bookof 1086 the village was listed asLatesberie.[3]
On theDissolution of the Monasteries,theadvowsonof Latbbury Abbey was given to the Dean and Chapter ofChrist Church, Oxford.[3]The manor of Lathbury, and Lathbury Park house, has descended through various families, includingLord Vaux,theEarl of Essexand theAndrews baronets.[3]The current Lathbury Park is a Grade II listed house dating from 1801, and incorporating elements from the earlier manor house.[4]
There was also once a 'free school' in a chapel in the churchyard, founded in the reign ofQueen Elizabeth I,leased to the schoolmaster by Christ Church.[3]The school was pulled down in 1698 and its materials used to repair the ancientrectory.[3]
Theparishchurch,All Saints Churchis a Grade I listed building, of 12th century origin.[5]
