Lawrie Robert Wilson(born 11 September 1987) is an English former professionalfootballerwho played as aright-back.

Wilson started his career atCharlton Athleticand played regularly for theclub's under-18andreserve teamsuntil he was released in 2006. He joinedColchester Unitedbefore the 2006–07 season but did not make first-team appearances during his one-year stay with the club. During his time at Colchester, he wasloanedout toConference SouthclubWelling United,making four appearances during his one-month loan spell. Wilson signed for Hertfordshire clubStevenagein August 2007 and made 190 appearances over five seasons. During this time, he helped the club win theFA Trophyin May 2009, as well as being part of the team that earned back-to-backpromotionsfrom theConference PremierintoLeague One.

He rejoined his first club, Charlton Athletic, for an undisclosed fee in July 2012. He stayed with the club for three seasons, making 96 appearances in theChampionship.A move toBolton Wanderersfollowed in August 2015, where he was loaned out toPeterborough Unitedin January 2016, who were managed by former StevenagemanagerGraham Westley.Bolton wererelegatedat the end of the 2015–16 season. He played 26 times throughout the 2016–17 season as they won promotion out of League One at the first attempt. He signed withPort Valein July 2017 before moving on toEbbsfleet Unitedsix months later. He was loaned toMaidstone Unitedin September 2018. In July 2020, he joinedBillericay Townof the National League South as he transitioned into coaching.

Club career

Early career

Wilson began his career as a trainee withCharlton Athletic.He was a regular in theclub's under-18 team,where he played in defence.[4][5][6]He progressed through the club'syouth system,and played inCharlton's reserve teamthroughout the club's2005–06 season,[7]making 16 appearances for thereservesas a second-year scholar.[8]However, he did not make first-team appearances and was subsequently allowed to search for a new club.[2]In February 2006, he played forLuton Town's reserve team in a match againstStevenage Boroughreserves atKenilworth Road,although notransferultimately materialised.[9]He was released by Charlton in April 2006.[2]

A month later, Wilson went on trial atLeague TwoclubShrewsbury Townand played the whole match in Shrewsbury's 2–1 pre-seasonfriendlyhome win againstRotherham United.[10]He was unsuccessful in his attempt to earn a professionalcontractwith the club. In August 2006, Wilson signed a one-year deal withColchester United.[2]Similarly to his time at Charlton, Wilson played regularly for the club's reserve team throughout the2006–07 season,[11]but did not make any first-team appearances.[12]He wasloanedout toConference SouthclubWelling Unitedin December 2006.[13]He made his debut for Welling in the club's 1–0 win away atCambridge City,but wassent offafter 27 minutes for violent conduct.[14]He returned to the first team in Welling's 0–0 draw withBasingstoke TownatPark View Roadin theFA Trophy,[15]and went on to play four times for Welling during his one-month loan spell at the club.[16]On returning toLayer Road,Wilson was released at the end of the 2006–07 season, without making a first-team appearance for Colchester.[2]Ahead of the2007–08 season,Wilson spent pre-season trialling atBrentfordandStockport Countyrespectively, training with Stockport for several weeks and playing in several pre-seasonfriendlies,but was ultimately not offered a contract.[17]

Stevenage

Wilson signed forStevenageof theConference Premieron 16 August 2007, joining on a one-year contract.[18]ManagerMark Stimsongave Wilson his Stevenage debut a day after signing for the club, coming on as an 86th-minutesubstitutein Stevenage's 3–0 win againstWeymouthon 17 August 2007.[19]Wilson played 27 times duringhis first season at Stevenage,with the majority of his appearances coming in the second half of the 2007–08 season.[20]The following season under the new management ofGraham Westley,Wilson played regularly in both thefull-backposition and atright midfield.[21]Wilson scored his first professional goal in Stevenage's 3–1 away win atBarrowon 30 August 2008, taking advantage of agoalkeepingerror in the 75th minute of the match to secure Stevenage's first win of the2008–09 season.[22]Wilson played in both of Stevenage's Conference Premier play-off games againstCambridge United,as the club lost 4–3 onaggregate.[23]He played in four different positions in six of Stevenage'sFA Trophyfixtures that season[24][25]and was deployed at left midfield in Stevenage's 2–0 victory againstYork Cityin thefinalatWembley Stadiumon 9 May 2009.[26]

Wilson started in Stevenage's first game of the2009–10 seasonin a 1–1 draw againstTamworth,adopting an attacking role on the right wing.[27]He scored his first goal of the season in a 3–0 victory againstEbbsfleet Unitedon 18 August 2009.[28]Two weeks later, in Stevenage's 2–1 victory againstRushden & Diamonds,Wilson suffered a "career threatening injury" following atacklefrom Michael Corcoran, which resulted in Wilson suffering adislocatedankle andbrokenleg in three places. Wilson had a successful operation the following day and was expected to miss the rest of the 2009–10 season.[29][30]Wilson returned earlier than anticipated, playing in a reserve match againstIpswich Townin March 2010,[31]and he made his return to the first-team a week later againstLuton Town,coming on as a 65th-minute substitute.[32]Two days later, Wilson started his first game in over eight months againstAFC Wimbledon.He scored Stevenage's second goal, scoring a half-volleyfromJoel Byrom'schippedpassin Stevenage's 3–0 victory atKingsmeadow.[33]He also played in the club's 2–0 win againstKidderminster HarriersatAggboroughin April 2010, the game that secured Stevenage's place inFootball Leaguefor the first time in the club's history.[34]Wilson played 13 matches during the season, scoring twice.[35]At the end of the season, Wilson signed a contract to keep him at the club until July 2011.[35]

Wilson played in Stevenage's first fixture of the2010–11 season,playing 72 minutes in the club's 2–2 draw withMacclesfield Town.[36]He signed a new contract with the club on 24 September 2010, keeping him at Stevenage until 2012.[37]He scored his first goal of the 2010–11 season in Stevenage's 2–2 draw againstAccrington Stanleyon 5 February 2011.[38]A month later, Wilson scored both of Stevenage's goals in a 2–1 home win againstLincoln Cityon 19 March 2011, his second goal coming from 25 yards (23 m) out after an interchange withJohn Mousinho.[39]He scored five goals in 50 appearances during the club's 2010–11 season, as Stevenage earnedpromotiontoLeague Onefor the first time in their history.[40]

Wilson was part of the starting eleven in Stevenage's first League One fixture at the start of the2011–12 season,playing the whole game as the club drew 0–0 at home toExeter City.[41]He signed a contract extension at the club on 19 August 2011.[42]Wilson scored his first goal of the 2011–12 season in a 5–1 home victory againstSheffield Wednesday,scoring Stevenage's fourth goal of the match just beforehalf-time.[43]Wilson scored six times during the season,[44]and he was ever-present during the season under both Westley and new managerGary Smith,playing in all 56 of the club's games, as Stevenage lost in the play-off semi-finals.[44][45]

Charlton Athletic

Wilson was linked with a transfer toPeterborough Unitedin the summer of 2012,[46]as well as Charlton Athletic.[47][48]Stevenage confirmed that they had received two bids for the player, both of which were fromChampionshipclubs.[49][50]Wilson signed for Charlton on 9 July 2012, the club he began his football career with, for an undisclosed fee.[51][52]He debuted for Charlton in the club's opening game of the2012–13 season,a 1–1 draw withLeyton Orientin the League Cup atThe Valleyon 14 August 2012, which Charlton went on to lose 4–3 on penalties afterextra time.[53]Wilson scored his first goal for the club in his 10th league appearance, scoring from close range to restore parity in a 1–1 draw withWolverhampton WanderersatMolineuxon 27 October 2012.[54]After a month out of first-team action, Wilson returned for Charlton's 2–2 home draw withBrighton & Hove Albionon 8 December. He scored the first goal of the match courtesy of aheaderfromDale Stephens'cross.[55]It turned out to be Wilson's last goal of the season, a season in which he made 32 appearances as Charlton finished in ninth position in the Championship, three points behind the finalplay-offplace.[56][57]

He made 49 appearances across the2013–14 seasonas Charlton posted an 18th-place finish under new managerJosé Riga.He competed withChris SollyandJoe Gomezat the start of the2014–15 season.[58]Wilson joined Championship rivalsRotherham Unitedon an emergency-loan on 20 March 2015.[59]Rotherham managerSteve Evanshinted that the loan move would allow him to evaluate whether or not to sign Wilson permanently in the summer.[60]He played three games for Rotherham during his time there.

Bolton Wanderers

Wilson signed forBolton Wandererson 5 August 2015, joining on a two-year deal.[61]Initially the club's first choice right-back, he was not selected by managerNeil Lennonafter putting in a poor performance during a 4–1 defeat atHuddersfield Townon 19 September 2015.[62]He joined League One clubPeterborough Unitedon 2 January 2016, on a one-month loan agreement.[63]He said that re-uniting with former Stevenage manager Graham Westley was a factor in the move to theLondon Road Stadium.[64]Wilson played four times during the loan, starting as a substitute in their game withSheffield United,and made his final appearance in the 2–2 draw withWest Bromwich Albionin the FA Cup.[65]He returned to Bolton and was recalled to the first-team byinterim managerJimmy Phillipsfor the final two games of the2015–16 season.[66]

Wilson regained his first-team place at Bolton following an injury toLewis Buxtonin September and then established himself at right-back under managerPhil Parkinson.[67]He was ruled out of first-team action for 10 weeks with a hamstring injury that he picked up during a 1–1 draw atMilton Keynes Donson 4 February 2017.[68]Bolton went on to secure promotion at the end of the2016–17 season,though Wilson was released after the club decided not to offer him a new contract.[69][70]

Port Vale

Following his departure from Bolton, Wilson signed a two-year contract with newly-relegatedLeague Two club Port Vale on 15 July 2017, after managerMichael Brownneeded to replace departing right-back and clubcaptainBen Purkiss.[71]He was not included in the first-team under new managerNeil Aspin,and was not in the matchday squad despite suspensions forJames Gibbonsand injuries toAdam YatesandJoe Davis.[72]

Ebbsfleet United

Having not played for Port Vale in over three months, Wilson joinedNational LeagueclubEbbsfleet Unitedon 9 January 2018.[73]He was signed by managerDaryl McMahon,his former teammate at Stevenage.[74]He made his Ebbsfleet debut on the same day his signing was announced, playing the whole match in a 2–1 victory atMaidstone United.[75]He made 17 appearances for the club during the second half of the season, including playing twice in theNational League play-offsas Ebbsfleet lost at the semi-final stage.[76][77]

He made two appearances for Ebbsfleet in the opening two months of the2018–19 season.[78]He subsequently joined fellow National League club Maidstone United on a month-long loan to get game-time.[79]He made his Maidstone debut in a 1–0 away victory atAldershot Townon 25 September 2018,[80]making four appearances during the loan spell.[78]Wilson returned to Ebbsfleet upon expiring his loan agreement with Maidstone and made 28 appearances throughout the season.[78]He made 21 appearances for Ebbsfleet during the2019–20 season,which was permanently suspended on 26 March 2020 due to theCOVID-19 pandemic in England,with Ebbsfleet in the relegation zone in 21st-place.[81]Wilson left Ebbsfleet on 29 June 2020, upon the expiry of his contract.[82]

Billericay Town

Wilson joined National League South clubBillericay Townon 4 August 2020.[83]He made 14 appearances before the2020–21 seasonwas curtailed due to restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.[84][85]ManagerKevin Watsonwas sacked in October 2021, and as captain Wilson was tasked with assisting caretaker managerDanny Brownin preparing the team for future matches.[86]Wilson played 15 times as Billericay were relegated in last place at the end of the2021–22 season.[84]Brown stayed on as manager though, and speaking in May 2022 said that Wilson would combine his role of being a squad player alongside his coaching roles at the club.[87]He played six times in all competitions during the2022–23 season.[88]

International career

Wilson was called up to play for theEngland Cteam on 27 August 2009, who represent England atnon-Leaguelevel, in a game againstHungary CinBudapest.[89]However, he withdrew from the squad after suffering a dislocated ankle and broken leg just three days later.[90]

Style of play

Wilson is primarily aright-back,but is also adept at playing on the right-side ofmidfield,and can also play at left-back, central midfield or the left-hand side of midfield if needed.[91]Describing himself, he has said that "I might not be this 9/10 every week player, but I become reliable".[92]
