Leirangeris aformer municipalityinNordlandcounty,Norway.The 185-square-kilometre (71 sq mi) municipality existed from 1900 until its dissolution in 1964. The municipality was encompassed the around theLeinesfjordenand the islands surrounding the mouth of thefjordin what is nowSteigen Municipality.Theadministrative centreof Leiranger was the village ofLeines.The village ofLeinesfjordenlies at the end of the fjord.[6][7]

Prior to its dissolution in 1963, the 185.2-square-kilometre (71.5 sq mi) municipality was the 393rd largest by area out of the 689 municipalities in Norway. Leiranger Municipality was the 550th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of about 1,417. The municipality'spopulation densitywas 7.7 inhabitants per square kilometre (20/sq mi) and its population had decreased by 5% over the previous 10-year period.[8][9]

General information

The municipality was established on 1 September 1900 when the southern district ofSteigen Municipalitywas separated to become the new municipality ofLedingen.Initially, the municipality had 1,117 residents. In 1910, the name was changed toLeiranger.uring the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of theSchei Committee.On 1 January 1964, the following areas were merged to form a new, largerSteigen Municipality:[10]

Name

The municipality was originally namedLedingenafter the old name for the local fjord that is now calledLeinesfjorden(Old Norse:Leiðangrar). The first element isleirwhich means "clay". The last element isangrwhich means "fjord".Thus the name means the" clay fjord ".[11]On 3 July 1909, aroyal resolutionchanged the spelling of the name of the municipality toLeiranger,to give it a modern version of theOld Norsename.[12]

TheChurch of Norwayhad one parish (sokn) within Leiranger Municipality. At the time of the municipal dissolution, it was part of the Steigenprestegjeldand theNordre Salten prosti(deanery) in theDiocese of Sør-Hålogaland.[9]

The municipality included all the area around theLeinesfjorden.To the north wasSteigen Municipality,to the east wasNordfold Municipality,and to the south wasKjerringøy Municipality.The highest point in the municipality was the 1,045-metre (3,428 ft) tall mountain Kråktindan.[1]

Government

While it existed, Leiranger Municipality was responsible forprimary education(through 10th grade), outpatienthealth services,senior citizenservices,welfareand othersocial services,zoning,economic development,and municipalroadsand utilities. The municipality was governed by amunicipal councilofdirectly electedrepresentatives. Themayorwasindirectly electedby a vote of the municipal council.[13]The municipality was under the jurisdiction of theHålogaland Court of Appeal.
