The rank oflieutenant in Eastern Europe(Croatian:poručnik,Czech:poručík,Polish:porucznik,‹See Tfd›Russian:poruchik,Serbian:poručnik,Slovak:poručík) is one used inSlavophonearmed forces. Depending on the country, it is either the lowest or second lowest officer rank.

Etymology

The rank designationporuchikmight be derived from‹See Tfd›Russian:поpученец(a person tasked by a special mission);‹See Tfd›Russian:поручение(assignment, commission) or‹See Tfd›Russian:поручить(task to look after, charge with something). Normally theporuchikreceived military orders in written form and was responsible to meet the particular goals and objectives anticipated.

TheImperial Russian Armyintroduced this rank first in middle of the 17th century, by theStreletsso-calledNew Order Regiments[clarification needed],reflected in theTable of Ranks.Aporuchikwas normally assigned to assistantcommanding officerof acompany,laterplatoon.In 1798 this particular rank designation was replaced bylieutenantbeginning with theRussian Guards,followed by other military units, and legalised by theTable of Ranks.
