John is caricatured, here as on other pages, with untidy straight hair sticking out in all directions, which was considered ridiculous by the Byzantines.

On May 29, 1453 occurred theFall of Constantinople,thus marking theend of the Byzantine Empire.TheEcumenical Patriarchatebecame subject to theOttoman Empire.

There are different suggestions by scholars for the succession of the Patriarchs from 1462 to 1466. The main positions are the following:

1466–1833

On July 23, 1833, theChurch of Greecedeclared itselfautocephalous.It was followed by theRomanian Orthodox Churchin 1864, theBulgarian Exarchatein 1872, and theSerbian Orthodox Churchin 1879, thus reducing the territorial extent of theEcumenical Patriarchate's jurisdiction.

1834–1923

On July 24, 1923, theOttoman Empiredissolved, replaced by theRepublic of Turkey.

The most frequently used ecclesiastical name is John, with one archbishop and 13 patriarchs taking this name. There have also been 72 ecclesiastical names that have only been used once. The number of all patriarchs to the present is 270.
