Logan Craig Gillaspie(born April 17, 1997) is an Americanprofessional baseballpitcherfor theSan Diego PadresofMajor League Baseball(MLB). He has previously played in MLB for theBaltimore Orioles.

Amateur career

Gillaspie attendedFrontier High SchoolinBakersfield, California,from 2011 to 2015. He was selected to play for the Oakland Athletics in the 2014 Area Code Games.[1]He attendedOxnard Collegefrom 2015 to 2017, where he playedcollege baseballas a pitcher alongside catching and playing third base.[2]

Professional career

Independent leagues

Gillaspie was not drafted out of Oxnard College in 2017 and joined theMonterey Amberjacksin thePecos League,and from there was moved up to theSalina Stockadein theAmerican Association of Professional Baseball.After being released, he was signed by theSonoma Stompersin thePacific Association.[3]In January 2018, Gillaspie played in theCalifornia Winter Leagueand from there was signed by theUnited Shore Professional Baseball Leagueto play for the Diamond Hoppers.[4]

Milwaukee Brewers

On July 13, 2018, theMilwaukee Brewerssigned Gillaspie to a minor-league contract.[5]Gillaspie played with theRookie-levelArizona League Brewersand the Rookie-levelHelena Brewersof thePioneer Leaguewith whom he posted a 3.26earned run average(ERA) over19+13innings pitched.

Gillaspie spent the 2019 season with theWisconsin Timber Rattlersof theSingle-AMidwest League,posting a 3–7win–loss recordwith a 3.96 ERA over 31 games (16 starts), striking out 92 batters over 109 innings.[6]Gillaspie was named a Midwest League all-star with the Timber Rattlers.[7]On September 11, 2019, Gillaspie was released by the Brewers organization. He did not play professionally in 2020 due to cancellation of theMinor League Baseballseason due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[8]

Baltimore Orioles

On June 9, 2021, Gillaspie signed a minor league contract with theBaltimore Oriolesorganization. He split the year between theAberdeen IronBirdsof theHigh-A Eastand theBowie Baysoxof theDouble-A Northeast,going 1–3 with a 4.97 ERA over 26 relief appearances, striking out 52 batters over41+23innings.[9]He was selected to play in theArizona Fall Leaguefor theMesa Solar Soxafter the season.[10]

On November 19, 2021, the Orioles selected Gillaspie's contract and added him to their40-man rosterto protect him from theRule 5 draft.[11]He returned to Bowie to open the 2022 season.[12]After six appearances with Bowie in 2022, he was promoted to theNorfolk Tidesof theTriple-AInternational League.[13]On May 17, 2022, the Orioles promoted Gillaspie to the major leagues for the first time. He made his MLB debut that night versus theNew York YankeesatOriole Park at Camden Yards,throwing two scoreless innings in relief.[14]On October 2, Gillaspie threw a scoreless 6th inning against theNew York YankeesatYankee Stadiumto record his first major-league victory in a 3–1 Orioles win.[15]Gillaspie finished the season with a 1–0 record with a 3.12 ERA in17+13innings pitched in 17 appearances.

In 2023, Gillaspie made 11 appearances for Baltimore, but struggled to a 6.00 ERA with eight strikeouts in nine innings of work. On September 2, 2023, he wasdesignated for assignmentfollowing the Orioles' waiver claim ofJorge López.[16]

San Diego Padres

On September 4, 2023, Gillaspie was claimed off waivers by theBoston Red Sox[17]and optioned to Boston's Triple-A affiliate, theWorcester Red Sox.[18]On November 15, 2023, Gillaspie was claimed off waivers by theSan Diego Padres.[19]He was optioned to the Triple–AEl Paso Chihuahuasto begin the 2024 season.[20]On April 17, Gillaspie's contract was selected by the Padres.[21]Two days later, Gillaspie was brought in to relieve in the 9th inning for the Padres against theToronto Blue Jayswith a runner on third base and one out, where he struck out bothBo BichetteandVladimir Guerrero Jr.[22]
