London Greek Radio(LGR) is anIndependent Local Radiostation forLondon'sGreek community, most of which forms part of the ethnically diverseCypriot community. It broadcasts in both Greek and English on 103.3FMin London and is also available onDABin Birmingham and Manchester.

LGR was first founded in October 1983 by Chris Harmanda and George Power (later to set upKiss FM),[1]and started life as apirate radiostation.[2]On 13 November 1989, it commenced legal broadcasting as part of theIndependent Broadcasting Authorityincremental radiolicenses. It initially shared its frequency with another former pirate station, WNK.[2]They become the first stations to share a frequency and they alternated every four hours. This continued until 1993 when WNK went into liquidation and closed down.[3]

It is currently based in theNorth Londonsuburb ofFinchley. The station has a focus onGreekandCypriotmusic, with some music sung inArmenianandTurkish. It includes news from theCyprus Broadcasting Corporation(CyBC).[4]It serves advertising for many Greek and Cypriot run businesses in and around North London. LGR has recently increased its English language air-time due to a lack of Greek-speaking young Londoners listening, particularly in the evenings as part of theNew Generationshow.

According to market research from 2007, its audience today consists mainly ofGreek Cypriotsand otherGreeks,as well asTurkish,ArmenianandMaroniteCypriots. Listeners also include other people ofMiddle EasternandMediterraneanancestry, especiallyArabsandJews,andItalians.[5]
