TheLongueuil Chevaliers( "Cavaliers" ) were ajunior ice hockeyteam in theQuebec Major Junior Hockey League,playing inLongueuil,Quebec,Canada atColisée Jean Béliveau.They were founded in 1982 and set aCanadian Hockey Leaguerecord for the most successful season ever by an expansion franchise, going 37-29-4 under the coaching ofJacques Lemaire.Longueuil reached the league finals for thePresident's Cupin both of their first two seasons. The Chevaliers finished runners-up both times losing togreater Montrealrival teams, theVerdun Juniorsin 1983, and theLaval Voisinsin 1984.
Longueuil failed to qualify for the playoffs in their next two seasons, but in returned to the playoffs in 1987 coached byGuy Chouinard.The team started the season withGuy Lapointeas general manager, who was promoted to assistant coach with theQuebec Nordiquesmid-season. Lapointe was then replaced withMichel Larocque.The Chevaliers survived the round-robin to start the post-season, then faced theLaval Titanin the division finals. Laval won the first three games then Longueuil came back, winning four consecutive games and the series.[1]Returning to the league finals, the Chevaliers defeated theChicoutimi Saguenéens.The Chevaliers travelled toOshawa, Ontarioto compete in the1987 Memorial Cupversus the hostOshawa Generalsand theMedicine Hat Tigers,finishing in third place.
However, low attendance doomed the team to failure and they moved toVictoriavillein 1987, becoming theVictoriaville Tigres.The team was owned byGilles Lupien.[2]
