Louis John Gill[1](January 19, 1940 – April 2, 2020) was an AmericanDemocratic Partypolitician who served on thePassaic, New Jerseycity council and in theNew Jersey General Assembly.

Early life and education

Gill was born inPassaic, New Jerseyin 1940. He attendedPassaic High Schooland then attendedFairleigh Dickinson Collegewhere he graduated with a degree in accounting in 1961. He then continued his education atMontclair State College,William Paterson College,andJersey City State Collegewhere he earned a master's degree in urban education.[2]

Career

Gill worked as a special education teacher in thePaterson school district.[2]

Gill was appointed to the Passaic Alcoholic Beverage Commission in 1968 and eventually served as chairman. In 1977, he was elected to the Passaic city council eventually becoming president of the council.[2][3]In 1987, with Democratic running mateGarfieldmayorThomas J. Duch,Gill defeatedRepublicancandidates Frank B. Calandriello and Andrew E. Bertone for two seats in theNew Jersey General Assemblyfrom the36th districtafter the two incumbent Republicans chose not to run for reelection. The two were reelected in 1989. In 1990, Gill cast one of the final votes in favor of GovernorJames Florio's unpopular income tax increases.[4]As a result of this and redistricting that removed more Democratic towns like Garfield andRidgefieldand added more Republican towns likeNutleyandBelleville,Gill and running mate Alfred R. Restaino were defeated by incumbent Republican AssemblymanJohn V. Kellyand former Republican AssemblymanPaul DiGaetano.[3][5]

During his time in the Assembly, Gillcontinued to be re-electedto his Passaic city council seat. Following his defeat from the Assembly, he continued to serve on the Passaic council until he lost his seat there in 1995.[6]

Personal life

In 1963, Gill married the former Mary Hutchison and had four children together.[2]He died on April 2, 2020.[6]
