Louis H. J. Sicking(March 11, 1966) is a Dutch historian. Sicking isAemilius Papinianusprofessor of History of Public International Law atVrije Universiteit Amsterdam.In 2016 he was awarded theDescartes-Huygens Prize.

Sicking holds aMaster´s degreein overseas history from theUniversity of Aix-en-Provenceand adoctorateinhistoryfromLeiden University.[1]

Works

His research mainly concerns maritime history, and the history of diplomacy and international law in the lateMiddle Agesand theEarly modern period.Recurring elements in Sicking‘s work are the French and Dutch language areas, as well as the lasting influence of theMiddle Agesthat extends into subsequent periods.

His thesis was published in English asNeptune and the Netherlands: State, Economy, and War at Sea in the Renaissance (2004).[2]In this work, Sicking departs from a strictly Belgian or Dutch perspective, focusing instead on the origins of theBurgundian-Habsburgmaritime organization in the broader context of theNetherlands.[3]

Serving as a lecturer of Medieval and Early Modern History atLeiden Universitysince 2001, Sicking also holds an endowed chair in thehistory of international lawatVrije Universiteit Amsterdamsince 2013.[1]In recognition of his scholarly achievements, Sicking was honored with theDescartes-Huygens Prizein 2016.[4]
