Luch 5V(Russian:Луч-5Вmeaningrayand sometimestransliteratedasLoutch-5V) is a RussianLuchrelay satellitewhich transmits data from theRussian Orbital Segmentof theInternational Space Station, and from other satellites inlow Earth orbit. It currently is stationed in the 95° Eastgeosynchronous orbitslot of the Luch network.

Luch

[edit]

Luch 5V is the third of theMKSR Luch Constellation.Luch 5Awas launched on December 11, 2011, andLuch 5B2 November 2012.[2][4]They aredual purposesatellites with both military and civil uses, and are similar to those in the USTracking and Data Relay Satellite System.[5]

Luch 5V was built byJSC Information Satellite Systemsusing the Ekspress-1000A bus, and is an almost clone of the Luch 5A. The only differences are some structural designs that had to be adapted for its companion to orbit,KazSat-3.[6]It has 6SandKu bandchannels with repeaters manufactured byThales Alenia Spaceand other equipment manufactured bySumitomo. The Ku band antenna operates at up to 150Mbit/sand the S band antenna at up to 5 Mbit/s. The satellite also relaysCOSPAS/SARSATsignals and Planet-S System data.[2][7][8][9][10]

The satellite is designed to relay data from the ISS, the newSoyuz-MSandProgress-MSspacecraft, satellites in low earth orbit and rocket launch vehicles.[7][3][11]

Launch

[edit]

Luch 5V was launched on 28 April 2014 on a dual launch withcommunication satelliteKazSat-3.TheProton-Mrocket with aBriz-Mupper stage launched fromBaikonur Cosmodromelaunchpad81/24at 04:25 UTC. After five burns of the Briz-M upper stage it was placed intogeosynchronous orbit.[3][1][12]
