Luther John Elliss(born March 22, 1973) is an American former professionalfootballplayer who was adefensive tacklefor 10 seasons in theNational Football League(NFL). He playedcollege footballfor theUtah Utesand was recognized as a consensusAll-American.Selected in the first round of the1995 NFL draft,Elliss played professionally for theDetroit LionsandDenver Broncosof the NFL and was a two-timePro Bowler.He worked as the defensive line coach atIdahofrom 2017 until being named defensive tackles coach atUtahin 2022. He has four sons that also play football:Kaden,Christian,Noah,andJonah.

Early life

Elliss was born inMancos, Colorado.[1]He attended Mancos High School,[2]and played for the Mancos Blue Jayshigh school footballandbasketballteams. He is of Samoan descent.[3]

College career

Elliss received anathletic scholarshipto attend the University of Utah and played for theUtah Utes footballteam as adefensive linemanfrom 1991 to 1994. He chose Utah since head football coachRon McBridetold him that he could also play on the basketball team under coachRick Majerus.After one season he decided to play football full-time. He was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference(WAC) selection in 1992, 1993 and 1994. As a senior in 1994, he was recognized as a consensus first-teamAll Americanand was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year.

The Detroit Lions selected Elliss in the first round (20th pick overall) of the 1995 NFL Draft.[4]He played for the Lions from1995to2003.[1]His nickname during his time in Detroit was "Pass Rushing Luther," and earned it with 324 tackles and 27.0 quarterback sacks with the Lions.[5]The Lions released him after appearing in only five games in 2003. He played his final season with the Denver Broncos in2004,seeing action in eight games and registering two sacks.[5]

In his ten-season NFL career, he played in 134 regular season games, started 119 of them, and compiled 331 tackles, 29.0 sacks, seven fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles, and four deflected passes.[5]He was a Pro Bowl selection in1999and2000.[5]

Coaching career

Elliss spent two seasons as the teamchaplainfor theDenver Broncosof theNFL.[7]On February 27, 2017, Elliss was announced as the new defensive line coach for theIdaho Vandals footballteam under head coachPaul Petrino.[7]Elliss has been the defensive tackle coach for theUtah Utes Footballteam underKyle Whittinghamsince January 19, 2022.[8]

Personal life

Elliss and his wife, Rebecca, have 12 children – seven of whom are adopted.[9]Three of his sons, Christian, Kaden, and Noah, play (or played) football for Idaho. In 2019, his sonKaden Ellisswas drafted by the New Orleans Saints.[7]In the2021 NFL drafthis sonChristian Ellisswent undrafted but was later signed as a UDFA by theMinnesota Vikings.Christian was alsoSports Illustrated's secret "Prospect X" for the 2021 draft.[10]In 2022,Noahwent undrafted and was signed as an UDFA by thePhiladelphia Eagles.His son,Jonah,played football for Utah and was drafted by theDenver Broncosin 2024.[11]

Elliss is a former resident ofOakland Township, Michigan,insuburban Detroit.[12]
