Lynsey Hanley(born 12 April 1976) is a British writer and academic.

Biography[edit]

Hanley was born in Birmingham and grew up on a council estate in the suburb ofChelmsley Wood.[1]She studied English atQueen Mary University of London.[2]

Hanley is a visiting fellow in cultural history atLiverpool John Moores University.She is the author ofEstates: an Intimate HistoryandRespectable: Crossing the Class Divide,and is also a regular contributor toThe Guardian.A frequent theme of Hanley's work issocial mobility,often based on her own journey from a working-class background to attending university and becoming a writer.[3]

As of 2023 she lives in Liverpool.[4]
