History

The railroad was extended to the site in 1849.[2]Early variant names were Powell's Station, Powellton, Powellton Station and Powellville.[1]This original name honored one Mr. Powell, a first settler.[3]In 1902, the current name, Madras, was adopted.[2]A post office called Powellville was established in 1871, and the post office's name was changed to Madras in 1902.[4]

TheGeorgia General Assemblyincorporated the place in 1893 as the "Town of Powellville".[5]
