Maiakawanakaulani Roos(born 27 July 2001) is a New Zealandrugby unionplayer. She plays as aLockfor theBlack Fernsinternationally and was a member of their2021 Rugby World Cupchampion squad. She also plays for theBlues Womenin theSuper Rugby Aupikicompetition and represents Auckland provincially.

Rugby career[edit]

2019–2020[edit]

Roos washead girlatTamaki College.She debuted for the Auckland Storm in 2019 while she was still in school and also played for the New Zealand Barbarians in 2020.[1]

2021[edit]

Roos was part of the inaugural Blues women's team that played in the first match against theChiefsatEden Park.[1]She made her test debut for the New Zealand national women's side, theBlack Ferns,againstEnglandin November.[2][3]

2022[edit]

Roos signed with theBluesfor the inauguralSuper Rugby Aupikiseason in 2022.[4]She was named in the Blues starting line up for their first game againstMatatū,they won 21–10.[5][6]She also started in their 0–35 thrashing by theChiefs Manawain the final round.[7][8]

Roos was selected for the Black Ferns squad for the2022 Pacific Four Series.[9]She scored her first international try againstCanadaat the Pacific Four Series.[10]She returned to the team for a two-test series against theWallaroosfor theLaurie O'Reilly Cupin August.[11][12]

Roos made the selection for the Black Ferns squad to the2021 Rugby World Cup.[13][14]She scored a try in the second pool game againstWales.[15][16]She also scored a try in the final pool game againstScotland.[17][18]

2023[edit]

In July, she was in the starting line up in her sides 21–52 victory overCanadaat thePacific Four SeriesinOttawa.[19][20]Roos captained the Black Ferns for their final Pacific Four match against theUnited States.She became the youngest-ever to captain the team, breaking the record that was previously held byFarah Palmerby three years.[21][22]
