Maiwandis a village inAfghanistanwithin theMaywand DistrictofKandahar Province.It is located 50 miles northwest ofKandahar,on the main Kandahar–Lashkargahroad.[1][2]
The area is irrigated by theHelmand and Arghandab Valley Authority.[3]
Maiwand is the birthplace of the 13th-centurySufisaintLal Shahbaz Qalandar.[4]
The village is notable for theBattle of Maiwand,which took place on July 27, 1880, during theSecond Anglo-Afghan War.Ayub Khantogether withMalalai Anaadefeated a British brigade underGeneral Burrows.[5]The British commemorated the battle with theMaiwand Lionsculpture atForbury Gardensin England.
