Malilipot,officially theMunicipality of Malilipot(Central Bikol:Banwaan kan Malilipot;Tagalog:Bayan ng Malilipot), is a 4th classmunicipalityin theprovinceofAlbay,Philippines.According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 40,857 people.[3]

History

Malilipot traces its history to the expedition ofJuan de Salcedoin 1573 and the colonization of Albay Bay, now called Albay, with 120 soldiers and guides. During these period, towns were established.Libonwas founded in 1573,Polanguiin 1589,Oasin 1587, andMalinaoin 1600. Other municipalities were established in succession.

Malilipot was officially founded as a municipality on October 26, 1945.[5]

Geography

Malilipot is located at13°19′N123°44′E/ 13.32°N 123.73°E/13.32; 123.73.

According to thePhilippine Statistics Authority,the municipality has a land area of 44.13 square kilometres (17.04 sq mi)[6]constituting1.71% of the 2,575.77-square-kilometre- (994.51 sq mi) total area of Albay. It is 20 kilometres (12 mi) fromLegazpi Cityand 547 kilometres (340 mi) fromManila.

Barangays

Malilipot is politically subdivided into 18barangays.[7]Each barangay consists ofpuroksand some havesitios.

Thesitios of Calbayog and Canaway were converted into abarrios in 1959 and 1957, respectively.[8][9]
