Mare Frigoris/frɪˈɡɔːrɪs/(Latinfrīgōris,the "Sea of Cold" ) is alunar marein the far north of theMoon. It is located in the outer rings of theProcellarum basin, just north ofMare Imbrium, and stretches east to north ofMare Serenitatis. It is just north of the dark craterPlato.

The basin material surrounding the mare is of theLower Imbrianepoch, while the eastern mare material is of theUpper Imbrianepoch, and the western mare material is of theEratosthenianepoch.[citation needed]

Like most of the other maria on the Moon, Mare Frigoris was named byGiovanni Riccioli, whose 1651 nomenclature system has become standardized.[2]Previously,William Gilberthad included it among the Insula Borealis ( "Northern Island" ) in his map ofc.1600,[3]andMichael van Langrenhad labelled it the Mare Astronomicum ( "Sea of Astronomy" ) in his 1645 map.[4]Pierre Gassendicalled it the Boreum Mare ('Northern Sea').[5]

In popular culture[edit]

This area of the Moon featured prominently in 'Behemoth', the second episode of the 1973 BBC science fiction mini-seriesMoonbase 3.[citation needed]

Mare Frigoris was intended to be the original landing site of the fictionalised version of Apollo 15 in theApple TV+seriesFor All Mankind, although in the show the crew decided last minute to divert the landing toShackleton craterin theLunar south poleupon finding out there is a high concentration of water ice in the area (adiscoverynot made in reality until the 1990s).
