Marcus Frank Harelik(born June 5, 1951) is an American television, film, and stage actor, and playwright.
Early life
[edit]Harelik was born inHamilton, Texas.
In 1909, Harelik'sRussian Jewishgrandfather, Haskell Harelik—upon whom Harelik's 1985 play,The Immigrant,is based—immigrated toGalveston, Texas.[1][2]
Career
[edit]In 1987, he moved to Los Angeles where he co-wrote, with Randal Myler,Hank Williams: Lost Highway.[3]In 1990, he worked in theHoward KorderplaySearch and Destroy[3][4]and the William Ball playCherry Orchard.[5]
Harelik has appeared in the filmsElection,Jurassic Park III,Eulogy,For Your Consideration,and42.For animation; he was the voice of Queen Uberta’svalet,Lord Rogers, inThe Swan Princess.Harelik has played parts on the television seriesSeinfeld,Numbers,Wings,Grace Under Fire,Will & Grace,NCIS,Boy Meets World,Breaking Bad,Bones,Six Feet Underand five episodes of the first season ofThe Big Bang Theoryas Dr.Eric Gablehauser.He also played Sara Tancredi's lawyer inPrison Break.He appeared on the series finale ofCheers,in a 2002 episode ofJoss Whedon'sAngelas Count Kurushu, and "Counterpoint"an episode ofStar Trek: Voyager.He also appeared in five episodes of short-lived NBC seriesAwake.[6]
In 2015, he appeared under his own name as an actor hired by theHeavenly hostto playGodthen later as God himself in the TV seriesPreacher.
Harelik appeared in the Broadway musicalThe Light in the Piazza.[7]Harelik's play,The Immigrant,has been well-received,[8]and was adapted into amusical of the same name.
In 1997, he released a sequel,The Legacy,changing it from a true story to fiction.[9]He has appeared in several other plays includingTemptation(1989),[10]The Heidi Chronicles(1991),[11]Elmer Gantry(1991),[12]Tartuffe(1999),[13]Old Money(2000),[14]The Hollow Lands(2000),[4]Be Aggressive,[15]The Beard of Avon(2001),[16]Cyrano de Bergerac(2004).[4]Harelik also played Dr. Paul Stickley in HBO's seriesGetting On,an American adaptation of the British sitcom of the same name.[6]
In 2015, Harelik co-starred as Jamie Thompson's father inThis Isn't Funny,and in 2017, he played baseball playerHank Greenbergin the filmBattle of the Sexes.In 2024, he was cast asDr. HirulukfromOne Piece.
Personal life
[edit]He is married to actressSpencer Kayden,who has acted in theatre productions alongside him.[17]They have one child.[18]
