Marshall Burdekin

Marshall Burdekin(11 April 1837 – 10 November 1886) was an Australian politician.

He was born inSydneyto merchant Thomas Burdekin and Mary Ann Bossley. Educated atDarlinghurst,he received a Master of Arts from theUniversity of Sydneyin 1859 and was called to the bar later that year. He had inherited a large fortune from his father in 1844.[1]

He was elected to theNew South Wales Legislative AssemblyforLiverpool Plainsat the1863 by-election,[2]transferring toThe Williamsat the1864–65 election.[3]In 1866 he was appointedColonial Treasurer,but he was defeated at theministerial by-election,[4]and thus held office for less than a month.[5]He returned to the Assembly at the1867 by-electionforEast Sydney,[6]but he did not re-contest in 1869.[5]

Subsequently he lived mainly overseas, falling seriously ill in America in 1877 and suffering from ill health continuously until his death in England in 1886.[1]

His brotherSydneywas also a colonial politician.[7]
