Matthew A. Dyson(born August 1, 1972) is anAmerican footballcoach and a former player. He is currently thehead coachof theGeorge Mason Universityfootball team. He playedcollege footballas anoutside linebackerfor theUniversity of Michiganfrom 1991 to 1994. He was selected as a first-team All-Big Ten linebacker as well as Honorable Mention All-American in 1992. He was the defensive player of the game in the1994 Holiday Bowl.He was selected by theOakland Raidersin the fifth round of the1995 NFL draftand appeared in four games during the1995 Oakland Raiders season.

Early years

Dyson was born inLa Plata, Maryland,in 1972. He attendedLa Plata High School.[1]While attending La Plata High School, Dyson competed in football, basketball, soccer, and track and field. He was a running back and defensive end for the La Plata football team.[2]

University of Michigan

Dyson enrolled at theUniversity of Michiganin 1990 and playedcollege footballas anoutside linebackerfor theMichigan Wolverines footballteams from 1991 to 1994.[3]After redshirting in 1990, Dyson started two games at outside linebacker in 1991,[4]10 games in 1992,[5]nine games in 1993,[6]and eight games in 1994.[7]

As a redshirt sophomore, Dyson recorded 52 tackles and an interception for the undefeated1992 Michigan Wolverines football teamthat compiled a 9–0–3 and defeatedWashingtonin the1993 Rose Bowl.[5][8]At the end of the 1992 season, Dyson was selected as a first-teamAll-Big Tenlinebacker.[5]As a senior, he sustained a broken left foot in the1994 seasonopener againstBoston College,[9]and missed the following three games before returning to action againstMichigan State.[8]In his final game for Michigan, Dyson was selected as the defensive player of the game in the Wolverines' 24-14 victory overColorado Statein the1994 Holiday Bowl.[10]In four seasons at Michigan, Dyson totaled 124 tackles, two pass breakups, one interception and one fumble recovery.[8]

Professional football

Dyson was selected by theOakland Raidersin the fifth round (138th overall pick) of the1995 NFL draft.[11]He appeared in four games, none of them as a starter, for the Raiders during the1995 season.[1]

Coaching career

After retiring from his playing career, Dyson worked as a coach. He was the defensive and offensive line coach and assistant defensive coordinator for theFalls Church High Schoolfootball team inFalls Church, Virginia.He has also served as the head coach of the Falls Church track and field team. He was the head coach of theGeorge Mason Universityfootball team for nine years.[2]

Dyson lives inGainesville, Virginia.He and his wife, Sara, have three daughters.[2]
